UCO Knocked Out Of League Tourney

EDMOND (April 7) – No. 5-ranked Central Oklahoma was ousted from the MIAA Softball Championship with a 5-4 extra-inning loss to Missouri Western Saturday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The two teams were deadlocked 2-2 after the regulation seven innings and both teams scored once in the eighth to stay tied. MWSU surged in front 5-3 in the top of ninth and the Bronchos managed just one run in their final at bat.

UCO, now 45-10 on the season, is virtually assured of a berth in the NCAA Division II national tournament after entering the week No. 1 in the Central Region rankings. The Bronchos will find out Monday morning if they will host one of the two four-team sub-regional tournaments that will be held next week.

"It was a battle and we just came up a little short," head coach Cody White said. "It's disappointing we didn't play better in the tournament, but we should be playing again next week and need to get ready for that."

The Griffons scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning and that 1-0 lead held up until the fifth when UCO moved in front.

Mikayla Rutland reached on an error to lead off the inning and Brighton Gilbert drew a one-out walk, with both coming around to score on Jacee Minter's double to right field.

MWSU hit a two-out solo home run in the sixth to pull even at 2-2 and it stayed that way until the Griffons scored a run in the top of the eighth.

The Bronchos answered in their half of the inning to keep the game going.

Minter started the frame with a single up the middle, went to second on Amelya Huggins' sacrifice and took third on a wild pitch before trotting home on Korbyn Skipworth's bloop single to left field.

MWSU went ahead again in the top of the 10th with a pair of runs and then held on – barely.

Gilbert opened the 10th with a single to right and moved to third on an error that allowed Minter to reach second. Huggins fouled off five straight two-strike pitches before drawing a walk to load the bases for Skipworth, whose sacrifice fly plated Gilbert.

But the Bronchos fell short when Terin Ritz's sinking drive was snared by MWSU's hard-charging right fielder for the final out.

Gilbert, Minter and Skipworth had two hits apiece to lead the offense.
