UCO Drops Playoff Series Opener

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma rallied from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the eighth before a rare slip-up in the ninth cost the Bronchos Game 1 of their MIAA Baseball Championship First Round best-of-three series against Washburn Friday night.

Central, 29-20 on the year, will now need to win Game 2 Saturday at 3 p.m. to force the if-necessary Game 3 Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We were close," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "If we could have gotten one more in the eighth on that rally I think we would have finished it off. But now we have to fight for it on Saturday and put the pressure back on them."

UCO trailed 2-0 in the top of the first inning, but tied the game in the bottom of the third. The Bronchos trailed 4-2, then 4-3, then 5-3, before a late rally.

Garrett Takamatsu's one-out single up the middle scored Landen Wood and Jaden Parsons to tie the game, 5-5.

In the ninth, MIAA Pitcher of the Year Kyler Patterson, who entered the postseason with a staggering 0.68 ERA, gave up two runs on three hits. Friday was the first loss of the season for Patterson.

Lawson Isaacs got the start for the Bronchos Friday night. He threw two innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Jacob Bailey came on in the third and threw four innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits.

Beaux Bonvillain threw 1/3 of an inning, giving up one run on two hits before handing it over to Patterson.

Central Oklahoma's pitching staff – all seniors – struck out 12 Washburn batters in the game. Isaacs had two, Bailey struck out six, and Patterson struck out four.

Takamatsu led the Bronchos at the plate. He went 3-for-5 with the two RBIs and also scored a run. Clayton Peterson went 2-for-5 with a home run. And Seth Gray went 1-for-4 with an inside the park home run.

In the third, Peterson's solo homer in the third made it 2-1. Kaleb Glass slapped an RBI single up the middle to score Takamatsu and tie the game, 2-2.

Gray's homer in the fourth made it 4-3. UCO got its final two runs on Takamatsu's line drive right past the Washburn pitcher in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Central Oklahoma and Washburn played a three-game series in Topeka, Kansas last month. The Bronchos lost the Friday night game there, but responded with wins on Saturday and Sunday to take the regular season series, 2-1.

Game 2 is Saturday at 3 p.m.
