Central Oklahoma Beats Central Missouri With 11th-Inning Walkoff

EDMOND – Just passed four hours of game time, tied 8-8, with a 1-1 count and two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, Clayton Peterson drilled a ball to deep center field and scored Jaden Parsons on the play for the walkoff victory.

Central Oklahoma 9, No. 3 Central Missouri 8.

"That was fun," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The guys battled for it. Central Missouri is a really good team and we're going to have to fight just as hard tomorrow, but the guys did it tonight. They fought and they found a way. That was fun."

Central Missouri arrived in Edmond Thursday with a 33-4 record on the season and a 26-1 record in the MIAA. The Mules of Warrensburg are ranked No. 3 in the country. The Bronchos of Edmond didn't care.

Central Oklahoma went toe-to-toe with Central Missouri in a game that felt like a heavyweight fight. The Bronchos scored first, then stormed back from a three-run deficit, and finally made a come-from-behind rally in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Central Missouri scored one in the top of the 11th to go ahead 8-7. The Mules managed a base runner off a walk by Kyler Patterson and he later scored on the only hit UCM could muster against the Broncho closer that was dominant and worked overtime on Thursday night.

Patterson threw a career-high 70 pitches, going 4 2/3 innings in the extra-inning affair. He struck out five batters on the night. Then his teammates made up for the only slip up.

Kaleb Glass drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the 11th. He moved to second when Landen Wood was hit by a pitch. Jaden Parsons followed, reaching on a fielder's choice. But UCM also committed a throwing error after Parsons stepped on first and Glass scored to tie the game, 8-8. Parsons advanced to second on the error.

Central Missouri brought in a new pitcher to start the 11th but changed arms after Glass's walk. UCM changed again after the fielder's choice and brought in Caleb Rogge to face Peterson.

Peterson watched the first pitch come in low for ball one, then watched another come in for a strike. He'd sized up the new pitcher. He readied for the third pitch. And then he turned on one and drove over the center fielder's head for the game-winning RBI double.

Patterson earned the win for his efforts – his first of the season.

Peterson finished the day 3-for-6. He doubled in the third, and later scored. He doubled in the sixth, and later scored. He doubled in the 11th to win the game.

Parsons went 2-for-6 with one run scored and he trotted across home plate as the Bronchos began their storming of Peterson at second base.

Garrett Takamatsu helped the Bronchos offense, going 3-for-5 with a two-run home run. He had three RBIs and scored three runs.

Noah Olson went 2-for-5 and he had a double, an RBI and one run scored. Trevor Stevens went 1-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Kaleb Glass went 1-for-4 as well and he had two RBIs and one run scored.

Lawson Isaacs started the game for the Bronchos. He threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out two in the game.

Jacob Bailey relieved Isaacs and he threw three innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out five.

Beaux Bonvillain made an appearance but he hit the only batter he faced.

Then came Patterson for the big finish.

Central scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning when Olson doubled home Takamatsu to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

UCO added two more in the third on Takamatsu's homer to tie the game 3-3. Peterson also scored on that swing of the bat.

Central made a big rally in the sixth, putting up four runs.

Takamatsu singled down the right field line to score Peterson. Stevens doubled to right to score Takamatsu. Then Glass singled through the right side to score Olson and Stevens. The last of the four runs gave Central Oklahoma a 7-6 lead.

UCM tied it right back in the seventh inning. Then the teams spent over an hour searching for runs. UCM managed an RBI double in the top of the 11th off Patterson. But UCO had other plans in the bottom half.

Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri are just getting started. The Bronchos and the Mules will continue their three-game MIAA series Friday at 3 p.m. with Game 2. The series wraps up Saturday at 1 p.m.
