Bronchos Take Series From Bearcats

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Central Oklahoma worked out a 4-1 victory at Northwest Missouri Saturday to take the MIAA series two games to one from the Bearcats.

Central Oklahoma improved to 24-16 overall with the win and the Bronchos are now 16-11 in league play. UCO is in fifth place in the MIAA standings with two weeks left in the regular season, but the Bronchos are only one game out of second place.

The top eight teams in the standings qualify for the 2022 MIAA Baseball Championship. The top four seeds will host a best-of-three series against the next four. UCO is hosting the four advancing teams in Edmond May 12-15.

"We were solid today on the mound and that was big for us to get the series," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "The goal is to win every series and we were fortunate to get another one this weekend."

Central Oklahoma dropped the series opener 10-8 on Thursday but bounced back with a 7-3 win Friday before Saturday's 4-1 victory.

Chase Lorg got the start for the Bronchos Saturday. He was solid in four innings of work, allowing just one run on two hits. He issued one walk too, but also struck out three batters.

Jacob Bailey, who picked up the win in the game, threw 1 2/3 innings of relief work behind Lorg. Bailey allowed two hits as well but kept Northwest off the scoreboard while striking out two batters.

Beaux Bonvillain threw one inning and gave up one hit. He issued one walk and struck out one batter.

Kyler Patterson recorded his team-leading eighth save of the season, throwing 2 1/3 innings of work to close out the game. He faced seven batters and retired each and every one of them, striking out two.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning Saturday. Jaden Parsons led off with a single to left field and he stole second during Clayton Peterson's at bat. Garrett Takamatsu then scored Parsons with a one-out double to left center.

Northwest tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning, recording the only run of the game during the second at bat.

UCO went back in front in the top of the fourth. Kaleb Glass was hit by a pitch and he stole second during Trevor Stevens's at bat. Stevens then singled up the middle to score Glass to make it 2-1.

Noah Olson led off the top of the sixth with a double down the left field line. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wyatt Gray and scored on a sacrifice fly by Glass, who hit a deep fly ball to right field. Olson gave UCO a 3-1 lead.

Seth Gray led off the top of the seventh inning and he saw one he liked, blasting an 0-1 pitch out of the park for his third homer of the season that gave the Bronchos their 4-1 lead.

Parsons led UCO going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Seth Gray finished 2-for-4 with a home run. Takamatsu, Olson and Stevens all finished with one hit apiece.

Central Oklahoma will play host for the remainder of the 2022 regular season. The Bronchos are scheduled to host Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday in a non-conference game before hosting Central Missouri next weekend. UCO is scheduled to host East Central the following Tuesday in a non-conference game before hosting Emporia State to close out the regular season the last weekend of this month.
