UCO Stumbles In Series Finale With NSU

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma dug itself into a big hole in the first inning and never recovered Tuesday night in an MIAA matchup against Northeastern State that left the Bronchos on the wrong side of an 18-5 defeat.

Central Oklahoma dropped to 22-15 overall on the season following the loss and the Bronchos are now 14-10 in MIAA contests.

"We let them get going and they just get better when they play like that," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We knew it was going to be a game like that, we just hoped we'd be able to do a better job at the plate."

UCO was down 7-0 before any Broncho ever stepped up to the plate. The deficit was 8-3 in the second inning and 12-3 by the third. Central Oklahoma's offense just couldn't get the production going on Tuesday.

Central Oklahoma scattered seven hits in the game but the only extra-base hit was a triple by Garrett Takamatsu in the third inning. NSU scored 18 runs on 18 hits that included six doubles and seven home runs.

Owen Logan got the start for UCO but was chased after just 2/3 of an inning. He allowed four runs on three hits and a walk. A.J. Ozorio-Brace threw 1 1/3 and surrendered six runs on seven hits.

Chase Lorg calmed the waters for a bit, holding Northeastern State scoreless for several innings in the middle of the ball game. He finished with five innings pitched, allowing three runs on four hits. Lorg struck out seven during his time on the bump.

Beaux Bonvillain gave up three runs on two hits and didn't record an out. Coby Grimsley finished off the game with one inning, allowing two runs and two hits.

Central Oklahoma scored three in the bottom of the first inning.

Jaden Parsons led off with a single and Clayton Peterson followed with a walk. Takamatsu then loaded the bases with a single to right field.

Noah Olson drew a bases-loaded walk to score the first run. Wyatt Gray reached on a fielder's choice that scored Peterson for the second run, and Kaleb Glass hit a deep fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly that scored Takamatsu and made it 7-3.

Takamatsu's leadoff triple in the third turned into a run when Glass singled to left. That made it 12-4.

Peterson scored again when Olson reached on a fielding error by the NSU first baseman to make it 12-5.

Central Oklahoma will hit the road for this weekend and play begins a day early for the Easter holiday. UCO will take on Northwest Missouri for a three-game MIAA series that begins Thursday night and continues Friday and Saturday.
