UCO Takes Series At Washburn With Win On Sunday

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma won its series finale at Washburn Sunday, 10-2.

The Bronchos improved to 22-14 on the season and took two of three from the Ichabods to move to 14-9 in league play. Central Oklahoma is tied with Washburn and Northeastern State for third in the MIAA standings and owns the tiebreaker against both of those schools. UCO hosts Northeastern State Tuesday in the final meeting of that series.

"We did a good job of limiting their chances today and I'm proud of the team for coming out ready to play and getting the win," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "It's important to try and win every series but anytime you can win a series on the road is a good thing."

Central Oklahoma lost 7-3 on Friday night before bouncing back with a convincing 12-3 win Saturday before Sunday's 10-2 victory.

UCO continued its non-traditional rotation Sunday but still maintained the same effectiveness. Beaux Bonvillain got the start for the Bronchos, threw 2 1/3 innings, and handed the ball of to Jacob Bailey. He picked up the win after a 4 2/3 inning outing. Then Kyler Patterson came in to close it down with two innings.

Central struck out a baker's dozen in Topeka on Sunday. Bonvillain struck out four, Bailey six, and Patterson three.

Jaden Parsons had a team-high three hits in the game, including a triple. The leadoff went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and also scored one run. Noah Olson went 2-for-4 and had a double and a triple. He scored twice.

Kaleb Glass also went 2-for-4 with a triple and he had one RBI and one run scored.

Seth Gray had a big day at the plate. He was the fourth Broncho with multiple hits. Gray had a double and a home run and also tallied two RBIs and two runs scored.

Gray's homer came with one out in the top of the second inning. The solo shot carried over the fence in left center to put Central Oklahoma in front, 1-0. Zac Freeman followed with a triple to right center. He scored on an RBI groundout by Landen Wood on the next play and it was 2-0.

UCO made it 5-0 with three more runs in the top of the third inning. Olson led off with a double to right and Wyatt Gray followed with a single to left that scored Olson. After Wyatt was caught stealing, Glass tripled to right center and he scored when Seth doubled to left.

Seth moved to third on Freeman's groundout and then scored on Wood's single to right to give Central the 5-0 lead.

Washburn got one back in the bottom of the third, the only run off Bonvillain in the game. Then another one back in the bottom of the seventh, the only run off Bailey in the game.

But UCO added more than enough insurance runs in the top of the eight and ninth innings.

Parsons knocked a two-out single to right field to score Freeman and Wood, giving UCO a 7-2 lead. Clayton Peterson got his only hit of the game after that and scored Parsons to make it 8-2.

Olson hit his triple in the ninth and Wyatt was hit by a pitch after that. Glass singled after that and scored Olson to make it 9-2. Wyatt scored on an error by the Washburn catcher to make it the final, 10-2.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to host Northeastern State Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos will then hit the road again for another MIAA series at Northwest Missouri State.

UCO also still has a three-game league series with Central Missouri in Edmond in two weeks, and a three-game league series with Emporia State in Edmond the last weekend in April to finish off the regular season.

The 2022 MIAA Baseball Championship will once again be a two-weekend affair this May. The top four teams in the league will host the next four in a best-of-three series May 6-8 and the four advancing teams will all meet in Edmond for the remainder of the championship May 12-15.
