Bronchos Open Series With Win

PITTSBURG, Kan. – An early outburst by the Central Oklahoma offense and a solid staff outing helped the Bronchos beat Pittsburg State 5-3 Friday night in the first game of the MIAA series.

Central Oklahoma improved to 18-12 overall with the win and UCO is now 11-7 in the MIAA. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. and the teams will wrap up the three-game series Sunday at noon.

"The good start helped us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our pitching was good against a really good team and we need to play like that all weekend. We need to be more consistent."

Noah Olson led the Broncho offense on Friday night and didn't waste any time getting started. The left-handed hitter cranked a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. He scored Clayton Peterson, who walked with one out, on the two-out drive to left center.

Olson finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored. He singled in the top of the third, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wyatt Gray, then scored from there when Kaleb Glass singled to right center.

Glass also had two hits in the game. He went 2-for-4 with one RBI. He also singled in the fifth.

Olson gave UCO a 2-0 lead in the first. After Pitt responded with a solo homer in the bottom half, Central extended its lead to 4-1 in the second inning.

Austin Lambert led off with a single through the right side and Seth Gray reached on a fielder's choice after that. A throwing error allowed Lambert to reach second safely on the play. Both runners moved on a sac-bunt by Landen Wood and then Lambert scored on a Jaden Parsons groundout to make it 3-1.

Seth scored on a second PSU error. Peterson reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and the run made it 4-1.

Olson's second run made it 5-1 and the Broncho offense cooled off after the third inning. Central Oklahoma had seven hits in the game and only two came after Glass's RBI single in the third.

Lawson Isaacs got the start for the Bronchos and was solid over 4 2/3 innings of work. He allowed just two hits, including a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. He also struck out five batters and didn't issue a walk.

Beaux Bonvillain, who was credited with a win on the night, threw just 1/3 of an inning in relief of Isaacs. Bonvillain came on in the fifth and struck out the only batter he faced.

Jacob Bailey threw 1 2/3 innings of work. He allowed three hits and two runs, one earned, and issued one walk. He struck out two on the night.

Kyler Patterson finished the game for the Bronchos, throwing 2 1/3, and earned the save for his efforts. He struck out five batters and didn't allow a hit. Patterson walked one. UCO only walked two in the game.
