Offense Leads Central To Sweep Of Hillcats

EDMOND (March 4) – Wyatt Gray, Clayton Peterson and Garrett Takamatsu combined for nine extra base hits and 22 runs batted in to spark Central Oklahoma to a high-scoring doubleheader sweep of Rogers State Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos prevailed in a pair of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association slugfests, claiming 19-12 and 17-11 victories at wind-blown Wendell Simmons Field. UCO had 32 hits -- including 15 for extra bases -- in taking a series win over the Hillcats to improve to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the league.

Peterson had three doubles and a home run while driving in eight runs on the day. Takamatsu and Gray both had seven RBI in the sweep, with Takamatsu bashing three homers while Gray had a double and a triple.

"I liked the way the guys responded after losing last night to come out and get the sweep today," head coach John Martin said. "We swung the bats well, but we didn't play very clean baseball and made too many mistakes.

"We're making progress and just need to keep working hard at getting better every time we step on the field."

Gray and Peterson had two-run hits in the second inning in helping UCO grab a 5-0 lead in the opener only to see the Hillcats score five in the top of the third to pull even.

The Broncho went back in front 9-5 in the bottom of that frame, getting a lead-off solo homer from Takamatsu and a three-run blast from Zac Freeman. RSU continued the back-and-forth battle with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to surge ahead 10-9.

Landen Wood ripped a one-out RBI single and Gray scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to give UCO an 11-10 lead, then the Hillcats tied it in the top of the sixth.

Central took the lead for good in its next at bat on Austin Lambert's two-out, two-strike solo homer to right field and finally taking control of the contest with a big seven-run outburst in the seventh.

It didn't appear the Bronchos would do that much damage when Noah Olson reached on a fielder's choice that resulted in the second out, but five hits, a walk and a hit batter later UCO had a 19-11 advantage.

Wood drew the walk to put two runners on for Peterson, who drove in both with a line-drive double to right-center field, then Shane Nixon was plunked. Takamatsu went yard to keep the onslaught going, with his three-run blast easily clearing the fence in left-center field.

The two-out rally continued with back-to-back singles by Lambert and Trevor Stevens before Gray's two-RBI double to center field capped the big inning.

Rogers managed just one run in the final three innings against closer Kylar Patterson, who gave up two hits while striking out four in earning his third save of the season.

Stevens went 3-for-4 to pace UCO's 15-hit attack, while Wood, Peterson, Takamatsu, Lambert, Gray and Freeman had two hits apiece.

The Bronchos trailed 1-0 in the nightcap before erupting for six runs in the third. Peterson mashed a no-doubt two-run homer and Gray ripped a two-run double to spark that uprising as UCO took a 6-1 lead.

Kaleb Glass' two-run double to left-center had the Bronchos on top 8-4, but RSU came back with five runs in the top of the fifth to move in front 9-8.

Central answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good at 12-9. Freeman highlighted that outburst when the speedy senior reached on a bunt single, stole second and raced all the way home on a throwing error on the play.

The Hillcats scored twice in the sixth to creep within 12-11, but UCO put the game away with a five-spot in the eighth.

Stevens and Seth Gray led off the inning with back-to-back doubles to left-center, then Freeman and Peterson had consecutive run-scoring hits. Takamatsu ended the scoring with his third homer of the day, this one a massive two-run moon shot to left-center field.

The Bronchos finished with a season-high 17 hits, getting three apiece from Takamatsu and S. Gray. Peterson, Glass, Stevens and Freeman added two hits each.

Owen Logan earned the pitching win in relief, while Beaux Bonvillain shut the Hillcats down the stretch to earn his first save. Bonillain allowed two hits and struck out three in three innings work.

UCO returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference game at Oklahoma Baptist before resuming MIAA play next weekend with a three-game home series against Missouri Southern.
