Bronchos Fall To Rogers State In Series Opener

EDMOND (March 4) – A late comeback fell short for Central Oklahoma Friday night at Wendell Simmons Field as the Bronchos dropped a 10-9 decision to Rogers State in the opener of a three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series.

UCO trailed 10-2 through six innings, then got back in the game with a three-run volley in the seventh and closed within one on Trevor Stevens' grand slam in the eighth. But the Hillcats held on, dropping the Bronchos to 7-6 on the season and 2-2 in league play.

"We put ourselves in too big a hole," head coach John Martin said. "I thought we battled hard to get back in the game and give ourselves a chance at the end, but overall we just didn't play well enough."

The teams will meet for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday to complete the series, a change from the original schedule due to rain forecast for Sunday.

RSU led 5-0 after three innings and the Bronchos didn't manage their first hit until the fourth when Landen Wood led off with a single up the middle. Shane Nixon came through one out later with a home run that barely cleared the center field fence to pull Central within 5-2.

The Hillcats pushed across four runs in the fifth and scored once in the sixth in pushing their advantage to 10-2 before UCO responded.

Nixon led off the seventh with an infield single, Garrett Takamatsu followed with a single through the left side and Austin Lambert drew a walk to load the bases with no outs.

Long sacrifice flies by Stevens and Wyatt Gray pushed across a pair of runs, then Kaleb Glass had an infield single to plate another as the Bronchos pulled within 10-5.

UCO got much closer in the eighth, scoring four runs on just one hit.

Clayton Peterson reached base on a third-strike wild pitch to open the inning, then back-to-back walks to Takamatsu and Lambert loaded the bases. RSU brought in a new pitcher and Stevens clouted the first pitch he saw over the center field wall for a grand slam that made it 10-9.

That was still the score when the Bronchos came up in the bottom of the ninth, but there would be no dramatic comeback as UCO went down in order.

Central managed just six hits, getting two from Nixon.

The Bronchos used five pitchers in the contest. Relievers Lawson Isaacs, Beaux Bonvillain and Kylar Patterson gave up just two combined hits in the final 3 2/3 innings.
