UCO Even With Newman Following Saturday Setback

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma's offense left too many opportunities on the field Saturday in a 5-2 loss against Newman in an MIAA game at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos are now 16-11 on the season following the loss and 9-6 in the MIAA. Game 3 of the league series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We had some chances and we didn't get anything out of it and that's the way it goes sometimes," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our pitching wasn't bad today, but we just didn't get hits when we needed to and they did."

Central Oklahoma had nine hits in the game to Newman's eight, but the Bronchos left nine runners on base too, hampering the effort.

The Bronchos recorded 16 strikeouts in the game.

UCO had a one-run lead early. Jacob Parsons reached on a throwing error by the Newman shortstop. He advanced to second on the play. He scored two plays later when Garrett Takamatsu slapped a single to right center field.

Tucker Elliott got the start for the Bronchos and was solid on the day. He only gave up five hits in six innings while striking out a season-high 10 batters. But a rally in the fourth gave Newman more than it needed on Saturday.

A pair of singles to lead off the inning preceded a walk, then a three-RBI double followed to give Newman a 3-1 lead in the ball game.

UCO got one back in the sixth and that came on one swing of the bat. Wyatt Gray pelted a solo homer to center field with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-2.

Unfortunately for Central, the offense couldn't add any more. Newman added one more on a home run in the seventh and the Jets added their fifth and final run on an RBI single in the eighth.

Elliott finished with six innings pitched, five hits and three earned allowed, and just one walk issued. He struck out 10 batters, the most by a Broncho this season.

Beaux Bonvillain threw one inning, striking out one batter. He allowed two hits and one run. Kyler Patterson tossed two innings, allowing one run on one hit. He struck out five batters over the final two frames.

Central Oklahoma had seven batters get a hit on Saturday. Takamatsu was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Gray was 2-for-4 with the solo homer.

Parsons, Clayton Peterson, Noah Olson, Zac Freeman and Austin Lambert all had one base hit in the game. Lambert's double joined Gray as the only two extra base hits Saturday.

Central Oklahoma and Newman will now play a rubber match on Sunday afternoon. The Bronchos won 11-1 on Friday night before Saturday's 5-2 victory by the guests. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
