Bronchos Sweep Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (March 2) – Amelya Huggins came through with a two-out run-scoring single to cap a seventh-inning rally that lifted Central Oklahoma to a tense first-game win and the No. 13-ranked Bronchos went on to sweep a doubleheader from Midwestern State Wednesday.

Terin Ritz and Huggins had back-to-back RBI singles in the seventh to lift UCO to a 5-4 victory in the opener before Ritz threw a complete-game four-hitter in a 4-2 second-game triumph.

The Bronchos stretched their winning streak to 12 straight with sweep, improving to 14-2 on the season.

"It was a tough day, but we came out with two good wins," head coach Cody White said. "We had our backs to the wall in the first game and found a way to get it done with some clutch hits."

UCO took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opener on Ritz's sacrifice fly that scored Shayla Harper, who led off the game with a single. Jacee Minter delivered an RBI single and another run scored on an error in the third, then Harper's fourth-inning sacrifice fly gave the Bronchos a 4-0 cushion.

The Mustangs got close with two runs in the bottom of the fourth before pushing across three runs in the sixth to grab a 5-4 lead.

Two quick outs in the top of the seventh put Central on the brink of defeat, but the Bronchos answered in clutch fashion.

Minter got the two-out rally started with a single up the middle and pinch-runner Korbyn Skipworth advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ritz ripped a single to left field to tie it and went to second on the play, then scored the winning run on Huggins' single through the left side.

Kylee Lynch put MSU down in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game and wrap up the compete-game pitching win. The sophomore standout gave up six hits while walking one and striking out one in improving to 9-0.

UCO finished with 11 hits, getting two apiece from Minter, Ritz, Brighton Gilbert and Lexy Dobson.

The Bronchos broke on top early in the nightcap as well as Gilbert drew a one-out walk, went to second on a groundout and scored on Minter's single to right field.

MSU tied it in the bottom of the first, but Central regained the lead in the second when Huggins drilled a one-out solo home run to left-center field. It was the second homer of the season for the junior catcher.

Huggins came through again in the sixth with another key hit, this one an RBI single, but the Mustangs answered with a run of their one in the bottom of the frame to get within 3-2.

The Bronchos tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Gilbert led off with a single through the left side, advanced to second on Tarin Dubler's sacrifice bunt and raced home on Minter's single to center field.

UCO survived some anxious moments in the bottom of the seventh to close out the sweep. The Mustangs had runners on first and third after a pair of one-out singles, but Ritz got out of the jam with an infield pop-up and game-ending fly out to right field.

Gilbert, Huggins and Minter had two hits each to lead a nine-hit attack. Ritz allowed just four hits and no earned runs while striking out eight and walking two in picking up the complete-game win to improve to 5-1.

The Bronchos return to action this weekend, traveling to Springfield, Mo. to play four games on Saturday and Sunday in the Drury Classic.
