Central Oklahoma Outlasts Southwestern

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma got a big lead early and hung on late for a 6-4 victory over longtime rival Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday night at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos wrapped up the season-opening Fourth Annual Edmond First Pitch Classic 2-1. UCO beat Oklahoma Baptist in 12 innings on Sunday before falling to Northern State Monday night.

"We responded well tonight," UCO head coach John Martin said. "That was the theme of the day after not playing well on Monday. They did a great job getting outs early and getting after them. We battled and found a way."

Central Oklahoma scored two in the bottom of the first and then four in the fourth through the sixth innings to build a big 6-1 lead. Despite three in the seventh from SWOSU, Central's bullpen shut it down in the end to get the win.

A.J. Ozorio-Brace got the win for the Bronchos after relieving starter Tucker Elliott in the in the fifth inning.

Elliott was solid, going 4 1/3 and allowing just three hits and one earned run. He did walk four batters but also struck four batters out. Ozorio-Brace came in and struck one batter out in 2/3 of an inning.

Lawson Isaacs threw the sixth and struck out the side but was chased in the seventh and was on the hook for two of Southwestern's runs. Beaux Bonvillain came on in relief of Isaacs and gave up one more run.

Jase Farmer, who picked up the win on Sunday, threw one inning and struck out two batters before Kyler Patterson threw the top of the ninth and struck out one batter. The two didn't allow any base runners.

UCO scattered nine hits in the game. Landen Wood led the way with three. Noah Olson, Clayton Peterson, Austin Lambert and Kaleb Glass, and Shane Nixon and Dave Janssen all had one hit.

Olson drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning to get Central started on Tuesday night. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Peterson and moved to third on a groundout by Garrett Takamatsu. UCO looked to be utilizing some small ball early on, but then Lambert went big. The sophomore third baseman smashed a two-run home run to right field to score Olson and himself and give the Bronchos a 2-0 lead.

Glass tripled to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. He scored on a Nixon sac-fly to make it 3-1, UCO. Olson walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. He stole second after that and moved to third on a throwing error on the play. He scored on a Peterson single to the pitcher and that gave Central a 4-1 lead.

Nixon singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on one of Wood's three singles. Wood, who stretched that single one more base on a sleepy defense, stole third and then scored himself on an Olson sac-fly. That made it 6-1, UCO.

Wood went 3-for-4 with three singles, one run scored and one RBI. Olson was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Peterson finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Lambert finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Glass was 1-for-4 with one run scored. Nixon went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Janssen went 1-for-3.

Central Oklahoma's Wednesday game at Southern Nazarene was postponed due to the delayed start to the Edmond First Pitch Classic. UCO was supposed to play its first three games Friday, Saturday, and Sunday but weather pushed it back two days and nixed the SNU game scheduled for Wednesday. UCO is now going to travel to Denver, Colorado for a three-game series with Metro State beginning Friday.
