No. 20 Bronchos Top No. 16 Southern Arkansas

CONROE, Texas (Feb. 7) – Shayleigh Odom came through with big-time plays on both offense and defense late in the game to lead No. 20-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 3-2 win over No. 16 Southern Arkansas Monday afternoon.

Odom delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single in the top of the sixth inning to put the Bronchos in front, then gunned down a runner at home plate from her right field spot in the bottom of the frame to keep SAU from tying the game.

Kylee Lynch put the Muleriders down in order in the seventh to wrap up a complete-game outing in the circle as UCO finished 3-2 in the season-opening Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex.

"We didn't play great, but we found a way to get the win," head coach Cody White said. "Shayleigh had a great weekend and she came through for us again today. We played well at times this weekend, but it was good to finally get on the field and we learned a lot about ourselves."

The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first without benefit of a hit. Shayla Harper walked to lead off the game, went to second on Brighton Gilbert's sacrifice bunt, took third on Tarin Dubler's groundout and scored on an error.

SAU scored a run of its own in the bottom of the first, then took a 2-1 lead in the second and it stayed that way until the sixth.

Dubler got things going for UCO in the sixth with a one-out walk, then Terin Ritz reached on a two-out error to keep the inning alive. Amelya Huggins walked to load the bases for Odom, who hit a line-drive single to center field to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs.

Odom sparked UCO's offense throughout the tournament, hitting .538 with 10 runs batted in.

The Bronchos held on in the bottom of the inning as SAU had three hits, with Odom throwing out a runner at the plate before Lynch got a strikeout to end the inning.

Odom had two of UCO's six hits. Lynch gave up 10 hits and one walk while striking out four in the complete-game outing, improving to 2-0.

The Bronchos host the UCO Festival this weekend at Gerry Pinkston Stadium. Central will play four games in the three-day event, starting with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Midwestern State.
