Central Oklahoma Opens 2022 Season With Walkoff Win

EDMOND – After two days of weather delays and clearing snow off the field, the University of Central Oklahoma baseball team finally opened the 2022 season and the Bronchos gave fans an exciting finish with an extra-inning walkoff victory.

Central Oklahoma beat Oklahoma Baptist 8-7 Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field in the first of three UCO games in the Fourth Annual Edmond First Pitch Classic. The Bronchos needed to do it comeback fashion.

"We didn't play very well so when you win like that it's good, but we know we need to get better," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We struck out too many times and we walked too many batters. But in the end, we're 1-0 and that's a good thing. I am proud of the guys for battling and never giving up."

Central Oklahoma trailed 6-0 heading to the bottom of the second inning and 7-2 in the fifth, but UCO rallied. The Bronchos posted five runs in the sixth to tie the game, then after five scoreless innings for both squads, Central found the answer.

Kaleb Glass hit a two-out double in the bottom of the 12th inning and after OBU intentionally walked Jaden Parsons, Clayton Peterson stepped up to the plate and delivered.

He hit a ground ball that nearly got through the deep-positioned right-side infield of Oklahoma Baptist. OBU's second baseman corralled the ball and it seemed it would be a long infield single and the bases would be loaded. But the second baseman bobbled the ball out of his glove and Glass flew around third to score the game-winning run.

It was Peterson's only hit of the game. The double earlier in the inning was Glass's only hit of the game.

"Those guys are two guys on this team that work really hard and they deserve to have those moments," Martin said. "They didn't do very well early in the game, but they kept battling and made it work in the end."

Parsons led UCO with three hits. He finished his first game in a Broncho uniform 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run.

Garrett Takamatsu, an All-MIAA selection a year ago, was a key reason Central had a chance on Sunday. He blasted a grand slam as part of the five-run sixth inning. He finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and drew one walk.

Peterson, Noah Olson, Landen Wood, and Glass each had one hit for the Bronchos on Sunday.

Jacob Bailey got the start for Central and threw three innings, allowing six runs on four hits and six walks. He did strike out five batters in the start. A.J. Ozorio-Brace also threw three innings and allowed one run on four hits and two walks. He struck out a pair of batters too.

Lawson Isaacs came in for a specialty relief and he struck out one batter, hit one batter, and got a ground out from another.

Beaux Bonvillain threw 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen and struck out three. Kyler Patterson threw three innings of relief work and struck out five, giving up just one hit.

Jase Farmer ended up picking up the win for Central Oklahoma on Sunday in his Broncho debut. The sophomore right-hander threw one inning, allowed one hit and one walk, and struck out one batter to get UCO out of the 12th and give the Bronchos a chance in the end.

UCO got its first run on a back-to-back bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the second inning. Parsons and Peterson drew the walks and Austin Lambert and Shane Nixon both scored.

Parsons scored Dave Janssen in the sixth on a double down the right field line. Takamatsu added the grand slam in that inning to score Glass, Parsons and Peterson.

Central Oklahoma is hosting the Edmond First Pitch Classic for the fourth year in a row at Wendell Simmons Field. The Bronchos will face Northern State (S.D.) on Monday at 6 p.m. before taking on Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

SWOSU beat Pittsburg State 6-4 in 10 innings earlier Sunday and Northern State lost to Emporia State 12-6 later Sunday night.
