Central Downed By Northern State

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma got in an early hole and couldn't dig out of it Monday night as the Bronchos lost 10-1 to Northern State on Day 2 of the Edmond First Pitch Classic at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is 1-1 on the season following the loss. The Bronchos beat Oklahoma Baptist 8-7 in 12 innings on Sunday. Central will wrap up the three-game festival Tuesday night with a matchup against longtime rival, Southwestern Oklahoma State.

"Sometimes things don't go your way and sometimes they do," UCO head coach John Martin said. "They got after us and we didn't respond. We have to respond on Tuesday."

Central Oklahoma fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning Monday night. The Bronchos did get one back in the bottom half of the inning, but the lead was 4-1 by the fourth inning and a six-run seventh inning by Northern State put the game away for Central.

UCO scattered seven hits in the game and all were singles. Landen Wood had two hits and an RBI. Zac Freeman scored the lone run and he was 1-for-4. Jaden Parsons, Shane Nixon, Clayton Peterson, and Austin Lambert all had one hit each.

Chase Lorg got the start for the Bronchos and threw five innings in his Broncho debut. The right-handed pitcher threw five innings, allowed four runs on four hits and three walks, and he struck out six batters.

Coby Grimsley relieved Lorg and struck out a pair of batters in 1 1/3 innings of work. He allowed three runs on three hits. Blake Bautz gave up three runs on two hits and didn't record an out in his first appearance of the season. Ethan Wayland struck out four in 1 2/3 innings of work and Owen Logan struck out two in the top of the ninth.

Parson slapped a single in the bottom of the first but came up injured after later stealing second base. Nixon replace him at shortstop.

Freeman singled in the second inning and advanced to second on Lambert's single after that. Wood beat out a single to shortstop with two outs and Freeman, who had just stolen third, scored on the play to make it 2-1.

Wood singled again in the fifth but was out on a fielder's choice later in the inning. Nixon and Peterson had back-to-back singles in the seventh inning but the Bronchos couldn't move them around.

Central left nine runners on base Monday night.

UCO is scheduled to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday night. The two schools have played 168 times since in the last 60 seasons with SWOSU owning a slight 86-82 advantage.
