No. 16 UCO Outhits Golden Suns

EDMOND (Feb. 20) – Jacee Minter and Shayleigh Odom homered and drove in three runs apiece as Central Oklahoma outslugged Arkansas Tech 12-7 Sunday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The Bronchos finished with 12 hits – seven for extra bases – in picking up their ninth straight win and improving to 11-2. UCO takes on East Central at 3:30 p.m. Monday to finish play in the four-day Broncho Invitational.

"We were aggressive at the plate and really swung the bats well," head coach Cody White said. "We needed all the offense we could get. Arkansas Tech has a strong team, so that was a good win for us."

Minter went 3-for-4 and Odom 2-for-3 to lead the offensive assault, with each hitting a double and a homer. Brighton Gilbert added two hits and two RBI.

Terin Ritz earned the pitching win, starting and going the first 4 2/3 innings. Isie Cox came in for 1 1/3 innings before ace Kylee Lynch threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the win.

UCO broke on top quickly, scoring three runs in its first at bat.

Shayla Harper didn't waste time igniting the outburst, driving the first pitch of the inning to right-center field for her fifth triple of the season. Harper scored on an error following Gilbert's infield single, then Minter blasted a deep fly that bounced off a flag pole past the center field wall for her third homer.

ATU got a run back in the top of the second with a solo homer, but the Bronchos responded in resounding fashion with five of their own in the bottom of the frame.

And again UCO started quickly, with lead-off batter Odom mashing a long bomb to straightaway center field for her third homer. The Bronchos scored four more times with two outs, getting a two-run triple from Tarin Dubler, an RBI single from Minter and a run-scoring double from Ritz to go up 8-1.

The teams scored twice each in the third, with Central getting a two-out, two-run single from Gilbert in maintaining a seven-run cushion at 10-3.

The Golden Suns made it 10-6 with three runs in the fifth and added a run in the sixth before UCO scored a pair of insurance runs in its final at bat.

Minter started a two-out rally in the sixth with a double to right-center field, Ritz walked and Amelya Huggins singled to load the bases for Odom, who roped a two-run double down the left field line to make it 12-7.
