EDMOND (Feb. 13) – Shayleigh Odom and Mikayla Rutland belted back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to spark No. 20-ranked Central Oklahoma to an 8-3 victory over Cameron Sunday evening at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.
Odom smacked a grand slam and Rutland followed with a solo shot in a five-run inning that turned a 2-1 lead into a 7-1 cushion and the Bronchos went on to fourth straight win. Central turns around to face Southwestern Oklahoma Sunday night in the final game of the three-day UCO Festival.
The Bronchos finished with 11 hits, with Jacee Minter and Amelya Huggins finishing with three apiece. Freshman Terin Ritz went the first six innings to earn the pitching win.
UCO took a 1-0 lead in the second when Huggins ripped a one-out double down the right field line and scored on Lexy Dobson's two-out single to center field.
Ritz aided her own cause in the third with a sacrifice fly that scored Brighton Gilbert, who led off the inning with a single, and the Bronchos pushed across five runs in the fifth.
Tarin Dubler walked to start things and Minter singled before both advanced on Ritz's sacrifice bunt. Huggins loaded the bases with an infield single and Odom promptly cleared them with her second homer of the season.
The sophomore drove the first pitch she saw to right field, with the line drive bouncing over after hitting the top of the fence. Rutland followed a Cameron pitching change with a shot of her own, blasting a full-count pitch high over the center field wall to make it 7-1.
The Aggies hit a solo homer of their own in the top of the sixth, then scored once more in the seventh to arrange the final margin.
