Bronchos Overwhelm Newman

WICHITA, Kan. (Dec. 9) – Brik Filippo's 26-second fall highlighted another dominating dual performance for Central Oklahoma as the No. 3-ranked Bronchos blitzed Newman 45-6 Friday night.

Shawn Streck also had a first-period pin, while Studd Morris, Nate Keim and Tre'Vaughn Craig added major decisions. Anthony DesVigne had a 6-1 win and UCO added two forfeits and an injury default victory in improving to 3-0 in its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener.

It was the 22nd straight win for the Bronchos, leaving them one short of tying the school record for consecutive victories. UCO moved to 599-251-11 in its illustrious history.

"We wrestled pretty well, but I still saw a lot of things we need to improve on," said head coach Todd Steidley, whose team has won the past two MIAA dual titles. "We're making progress and getting better, which is what we're focusing on right now."

Filippo wasted little time in his 149-pound bout, striking for a takedown off the opening whistle before quickly turning Hunter Dietrich and getting the fall just 26 seconds into the opening period.

Streck ended UCO's dominating night in impressive fashion. The agile  heavyweight overwhelmed DeLeon Freeman, scoring an amazing seven takedowns in the first period before getting the pin at the 2:43 mark.

Morris had two takedowns, a four-point near-fall and more than five minutes riding time in a 10-0 rout to start the dual at 141, with Keim notching two takedowns and a pair of near-falls in a 15-3 romp at 141.

Craig had two takedowns and a pair of near-falls in a 10-0 shutout at 174, while DesVigne followed with a methodical 6-1 victory.

Ty Lucas was leading 1-0 early in the second period of his 165-pound bout before Jace Fisher suffered an injury and was unable to continue. Gabe Johnson (157) and Dalton Abney (197) picked up forfeits.

UCO's lone loss came at 133 where regular 125 Garrett Steidley filled in for Dylan Lucas. Steidley led that match 6-2 in the third period before giving up a defensive fall.

The Bronchos finish their first-semester schedule next week, traveling to Indianapolis, Ind. for the prestigious Midwest Classic.
