UCO Takes Sting Out Of Hornets

EMPORIA, Kan. (Oct. 22) – Courtney Lane knocked down 10 kills and added three service aces as No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma breezed past Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Emporia State Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos were barely tested in claiming 25-18, 25-8, 25-21 victories for their ninth sweep of the season. UCO improved to 22-4 overall and 12-4 in league play.

"We came out and took care of business," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I was proud of the team for staying focused on today's match after such a big win last night. Any win on the road is big in this conference."

Central knocked off No. 12 Washburn in an epic five-set battle Friday night before moving on to face Emporia, but there would be no letdown for the Bronchos.

Lane led UCO's balanced attack, hitting .346 after finishing with 10 kills and just one error in 26 attacks. Brynn Egger hit .462 with six kills and no miscues in 13 attempts.

The Bronchos also got 29 assists, 10 digs and five kills from Lindsey Houran, while Lari Migliorino also had five kills to go along with two blocks. Mallorie Koehn chipped in four kills.

UCO jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set behind two kills from Lane and aces by Houran and Koehn. The Hornets rallied within 13-11, but Lane responded with a trio of kills while Koehn had another ace and a kill in a 7-0 run that made it 20-14.

The Bronchos coasted in from there and then got quick kills from Migliorino and Egger in the second set to grab quick control. ESU had no answer and UCO cruised to a 17-point runaway.

Emporia put up its toughest battle in the third set, which was tied 7-7 when Lane again took charge.

The junior outside hitter had two aces and a kill in a 5-0 scoring spurt that gave the Bronchos a 12-7 advantage and the Bronchos stayed safely in front the rest of the way to close out the sweep.

UCO returns home for its final two home matches of the season next week, hosting defending MIAA champion Central Missouri Thursday and Missouri Western Friday.
