The Stampede Continues

No. 22 Central Oklahoma Wins 11th Straight

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – No. 22 Central Oklahoma continued its stampede through the MIAA Saturday when the Bronchos raced past Lincoln, 82-55, at Jason Gym.

Central has won 11 consecutive games and 10 straight in the MIAA. The Bronchos are now 15-2 this season overall and 10-1 in league play.

"Today was a good team effort," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We all played for each other today and worked really well together. It's a blessing to get two road wins and we got to start getting ready for the next one."

Central Oklahoma debuted in the national rankings this week before extending its win streak to 11 games. Now UCO is scheduled to host No. 2 ranked defending national champion Northwest Missouri. That MIAA showdown is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Hamilton Field House.

Saturday, Jaden Wells powered the Bronchos past Lincoln with his second 20-point game in three days. The freshman sharp shooter was 7-for-12 on the day, hitting 4 of 8 shots from behind the 3-point line. Wells, who also hit both of his free-throw attempts, had four rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Camryn Givens also had a big game, just missing another 20-point performance. He scored 19 points on 9 of 12 shooting. He hit one 3-pointer on the day and also had four rebounds.

Callen Haydon and Isaiah Wade both scored nine points in the game. Haydon went 4-for-10 and hit one 3-pointer. He also had three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Wade scored nine on 2 of 10 shooting, but hit five free-throws to help out. He also had five rebounds and four assists and two steals.

Jalyn Turner and Preston Aymond both scored eight points. Turner hit a pair of 3-pointers during a big UCO run in the second half. Aymond pulled down a team-high nine rebounds in the game.

Conner Calavan (three), and Carson Calavan, Seth Hurd and Danquez Dawsey (two each) also scored Saturday.

UCO shot exactly 50 percent in the win. The Bronchos hit 32 of 64 shots in the game, including 9 of 25 shots from behind the 3-point line. Central also made 9 of 13 free-throws.

There were three lead changes in the game Saturday and all came in the first half.

Lincoln led early, going up 11-4 after just under four minutes of play. But the Bronchos responded with a 17-3 run over the next 3:48, hitting 7 of 8 shots including two 3-pointers, and the Bronchos took a 21-14 lead.

But Lincoln responded to that with a 16-2 run of its own. The hosts hit 5 of 7 shots while UCO went just 1-for-7 during the 4:20 run.

The back-and-forth first half of runs continued with Central taking another turn. UCO outscored Lincoln 16-2 over the final 7:08 of the first half to take a 39-32 lead by halftime. The Bronchos hit a couple of threes while also holding Lincoln to 1 of 10 shooting down the stretch.

UCO eased out from a seven-point halftime lead to a 10-point lead over the first several minutes of the second half. Then the Bronchos hit another spurt.

Wells hit one of his four 3-pointers and made his two free-throws before Turner hit his two big 3-pointers, the latter giving UCO a 58-41 lead and capping off another 11-2 run by the stampeding Bronchos.

Central eventually led by 29 late in the second half before settling on the 27-point victory, 82-55.

UCO has won 11 consecutive games overall and every single one of those wins has been by double digits. Never before in school history has a team won more than six games in a row by double digits. Until now.

Central has outscored the competition by a total of 206 points during the 11-game win streak, giving UCO an average margin of victory of 18.7 points during the run.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to play two home games next week. Thursday at 7:30 p.m. it'll be No. 22 Central Oklahoma against No. 2 Northwest Missouri. UCO is scheduled to host Missouri Western on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
