Bronchos Finish 10th In Washburn Tourney

TOPEKA, Kan. (Sept. 14) – Central Oklahoma's youthful men's golf team opened the fall season with a 10th-place finish at the Washburn Invitational that wrapped up Tuesday.

The Bronchos shot a closing 302 to finish three trips around the 6,654-yard, par-71 Topeka Country Club with a 908 total. Arkansas Tech won the 19-team event at 863, followed by Henderson State (871) and the host Ichabods (874).

Evan Griffith, Bennett Baldwin and Caleb Kimmel all shot final-rounds 75s, with Ross Taylor adding a 77 and Riley Harris a 79. Griffith, Kimmel and Taylor are all sophomores, while Baldwin and Harris are freshmen.

"We're a young team with a lot of growing to do," first-year head coach Derrick Thompson said. "It's a good group of guys and I know they will put in the work.

"We were excited to get after it this week and will be ready to go compete next week. It will also be nice to be back to full strength since we were missing a couple of guys this week."

Griffith ended up tied for 13th in the individual standings with a 220 total.

UCO continues its five-tournament fall season next week when it travels to Tahlequah, Okla. for the NSU Classic.
