Bronchos Ready For Season Opener

The Central Oklahoma men's golf team gets the 2021-22 season underway this week when the Bronchos of first-year head coach Derrick Thompson travel to Topeka, Kan. for the Washburn Invitational.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament starts Monday at 8:30 a.m. Two rounds are on tap the first day at the 6,654-yard, par-71 Topeka Country Club before the final 18-hole round Tuesday.

Joining UCO in the 18-team field will be host Washburn, Central Missouri, Rogers State, Missouri Western, Missouri Southern, Northeastern State, Lincoln, Fort Hays State, Newman, Henderson State, Southwestern Oklahoma, Winona State, Arkansas Tech, Rockhurst, Minnesota-Crookston, Upper Iowa and Concordia-St. Paul.

"The guys and I are excited to get started," said Thompson, who came to UCO this summer after guiding the men's and women's teams at Iowa Western Community College to 43 wins during a seven-year stint. "We've been working hard to get ready and look forward to teeing it up."

Making up Central's five-man lineup will be sophomores Evan Griffith, Caleb Kimmel and Ross Taylor along with freshmen Bennett Baldwin and Riley Harris.

Kimmel, Griffith and Taylor are UCO's three returners from last year, while Baldwin and Harris will be making their collegiate debut this week.

Kimmel played in six of eight tournaments last year, finishing with a 74.88 average and placing in the top 20 three times. Taylor had a 75.5 average in two tournaments and Griffith had a 76.25 average in six events with two top-20 finishes.

It will be the first of five fall tournaments for the Bronchos.
