Record Day For The Bronchos At KickingBird Golf Club

UCO Sets Team Scoring Record At Skip Wagnon Invitational Sponsored By Visit Edmond

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma set a school record for the lowest team score in a single round and then tied that mark in the second round, helping the Bronchos to the lead after 36 holes of the Skip Wagnon Invitational sponsored by Visit Edmond Monday at KickingBird Golf Club.

UCO shot a 19-under-par 261 twice on Monday and leads the field by 19 shots with a 38-under-par 522. Second-place Oklahoma Christian posted rounds of 269 and 272 for a 541. Arkansas Tech (542), Harding (544), and Hutchinson Community College (548) round out the top five.

But the team scoring wasn't the only school record altered on Monday. Senior All-American Nick Canales already owned the single round record with a 62, which he's recorded twice. He did it again on Monday. However, on Central's B team, Andrew Talburt set a new school record with a 9-under-par 61.

"Kind of a crazy day out here," UCO head men's golf coach Derrick Thompson said. "There were a lot of low scores and I'm glad we're at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the day. But we do still have work to do tomorrow. Really happy for the guys to get those records, but we're still focused on trying to win the tournament tomorrow."

Canales leads the individual field after 36 holes. He followed up his sensational 8-under 62 with a 6-under 64 to land at 126, two shots ahead of the next player. John Helzer, a freshman playing in his second career tournament, joined the scoring party too on Monday. He opened with a 3-under 67 and followed that with an 8-under 62 – a score that would have tied the school record if not for Talburt's performance. Helzer's 129 put him in third place.

William Whorton, another freshman in the UCO lineup, is tied for fourth after a 36-hole 132. Whorton posted back-to-back rounds of 4-under 66 on Monday.

Canales, Helzer, and Whorton, along with Bryant Polhill and Rhett Hughes, make up the UCO A team. Polhill his tied for 22nd at 3-under. He posted rounds of 66 and 71 on Monday. Hughes is 40th at even par following his rounds of 1-over 71 and 1-under 69.

Talburt leads the UCO B team, which is 13th place in the team standings. The Bronchos posted a 558 (272-286). Talburt is tied for ninth one shot back of Whorton. He followed his school record 61 with a 2-over-par 72.

Ross Wright shot a 2-over-par 142 (74-68), Jack Ensey posted a 3-over-par 143 (70-73), Ty Hyatt shot a 144 (71-73), and Brock Jerman shot a 146 (70-76).

Central Oklahoma tees off at 9 a.m. Tuesday for the third and final round of the second annual Skip Wagnon Invitational sponsored by Visit Edmond.
