Bronchos Win Third Tournament Of Fall

ANDOVER, Kan. – Central Oklahoma won its third tournament of the fall Tuesday afternoon taking top honors at the Newman Fall Invitational at Terradyne Country Club.

UCO posted a 2-over-par 854 this week, recording consecutive rounds of 5-over 289 on Monday before shooting an 8-under 276 on Tuesday. Washburn finished second, 13 shots behind the Bronchos with an 867. Missouri Southern (873), Rockhurst (876), and Pittsburg State (880) rounded out the top five teams.

"We played a lot better today," UCO head men's golf coach Derrick Thompson said. "It's a good way to finish the tournament and to finish the fall schedule. We get to take a short break and then we'll be back at it getting ready for the spring really soon."

Nick Canales led the Bronchos with a third-place finish this week. The senior shot an even-par 213. Canales shot a 3-over 74 and an even-par 71 on Monday. He followed that up with a 3-under 68 on Tuesday. Canales recorded an eagle on the 525-yard Par 5 Eighth. He also sank five birdie putts and nine par putts on Tuesday's final round.

Bryant Polhill gave the Bronchos two in the Top 10 with a seventh-place finish. The junior shot a 1-over-par 214 this week. He started with an even-par 71 yesterday morning, posted a 6-over 77 in the afternoon, then finished Tuesday with a 5-under 66. He's one of three players to record a tournament-low 66 this week. All came on Tuesday.

Freshman John Hezler finished 15th this week with a 4-over 217. He shot 72-75 on Monday and followed up with a 1-under 70 on Tuesday. Rhett Hughes was one shot back with a 218, posting a 72-74 on Monday before a 1-over 72 on Tuesday.

Another freshman, William Whorton, finished tied for 27th. He logged a 8-over-par 221 this week with rounds of 76-69 on Monday and another 76 on Tuesday. Andrew Talburt played this week as an individual for the Bronchos and finished 39th with a 10-over-par 223. Talburt recorded rounds of 76-75 on Monday and 72 on Tuesday.

UCO won the season-opening tournament, The Mule, at Central Missouri's Mules National in September. After back-to-back runner-up finishes, the Bronchos then won the Skip Wagnon Invitational in Edmond and now the Newman Fall Invitational in Kansas. Central Oklahoma also had three individual titles this fall. Whorton won The Mule while Canales won the Holiday Inn Express Invitational at St. Joseph Country Club and the Skip Wagnon Invitational at KickingBird Golf Club in Edmond.

Central Oklahoma will return for the Spring season in 2027 looking to make a run at a third-straight MIAA title.
