UCO Drops Extra-inning Thriller To No. 3 Augustana

EMPORIA, Kan. (March 20) – No. 23-ranked Central Oklahoma had a big upset in its sights only to succumb to a late rally by No. 3 Augustana in dropping a 10-8 extra-inning decision in the opening game of the Hy-Vee Classic Saturday morning.

The Bronchos used a five-run fourth-inning volley to grab a 6-3 lead in the game and were up 6-4 going to the top of seventh. The Vikings pushed across two runs in their final at bat to tie it and then exploded for four runs in the eighth to take charge.

UCO got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't complete the comeback in falling to 12-5. The Bronchos look to bounce back in Saturday's second game against Sioux Falls, then will take on Augie and the Cougars again Sunday.

"We had a chance and just didn't get it done," head coach Cody White said. "I was proud of the way we battled. Augie has a great team and we went toe-to-toe with them, but they made more plays than we did in the last couple of innings."

Augie, which beat the Bronchos in the 2019 Central Super Regional on its way to the national championship, led 3-1 early before Central went in front with its big fourth-inning outburst.

Allie Eicher walked to open the inning, with back-to-back singles by Lexy Dobson and Taylor McKittrick loading the bases. Amelya Huggins and Mikayla Rutland delivered consecutive RBI singles to tie it before Brighton Gilbert's three-run double gave UCO a 6-3 lead.

The Vikings got a run back in the fifth and then scored twice in the seventh to force extra innings.

Augie continued its late-game surge in the eighth, scoring four runs on four hits to move ahead 10-6.

The Bronchos tried to counter in the final offensive try. Hazel Puempel was placed on second via the international tiebreaker to start the inning and Dobson drilled a one-out home run to left field to make it 10-8, but two quick outs ended the threat.

Dobson, Gilbert and Jacee Minter had two hits apiece for UCO, which finished with nine hits. Augie collected 12 hits.
