Central Tops Northeastern State In Game 1 Showdown

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma softball team beat Northeastern State 2-0 Wednesday afternoon in the first game of an MIAA doubleheader.

The Bronchos improved to 10-2 with the win.

"That was a battle between two very good teams and I'm glad we came out on top," UCO head coach Cody White said. "Now we need to go work even harder to get another one."

The two old rivals went at it early on in Game 1 Wednesday afternoon. The Bronchos didn't record a hit until the fifth inning when veteran catcher Halley Randolph managed a single to center field. But that didn't result in anything more. UCO needed to wait one more inning before putting together a rally.

In the top of the sixth, freshman Jacee Minter drew a walk before senior Hazel Puempel smashed a double to left field. With two runners in scoring position, Allie Eicher stepped up to the plate and delivered. The junior first baseman pelted a two-RBI single to right field, scoring both Minter and Puempel and giving Central Oklahoma a 2-0 lead.

UCO added three hits in the seventh inning but no more runs.

Kylee Lynch was the lone pitcher in the circle in Game 1 and was solid. The freshman lefty threw seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out four NSU batters. Lynch recorded an even split eight groundouts and eight flyouts. She allowed just two hits in the second innning and one more in the fifth to go with her only issued walk in the game. Lynch was perfect in five of seven innings Wednesday.

Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State played the second game of the doubleheader later Wednesday afternoon.
