Bronchos Fourth in Arkansas Tourney

CABOT, Ark. (March 1) – Freshmen Caleb Kimmel and Evan Griffith had strong starts to lead Central Oklahoma to a fourth-place standing after first-day play at the Natural State Classic Monday.
 
The Bronchos carded a 300 at the 7,051-yard, par-72 Greystone Country Club, leaving them 12 shots behind leader Arkansas Tech going into Tuesday's final round. Henderson State and Missouri Western are tied for second in the 19-team field at 299, one shot ahead of UCO.
 
Kimmel, playing in his first collegiate tournament, is tied for second in the individual standings after opening with a two-under-par 70. Second-year freshman Griffith is tied for fifth after coming in with an even-par 72.
 
Central also got a 78 from Jacob Lackey, while Kylian Cavdar shot 80 and Joe Lemieux 84.
 
The Bronchos started play on No. 10 and Kimmel birdied the par-3 12th and par-5 14th in shooting two-under 34 on his first nine holes. He came back with seven pars, one birdie and one bogey for a closing even-par 36.
 
Griffith overcame an early bogey with birdies on both back-nine par-5s to make the turn at one-under 35. He dropped back to even-par with a bogey on his 13th hole before finishing with five straight pars.
