Bronchos Fall To Minot State

EDMOND (Feb. 27) – Minot State scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a tie and went on to hand No. 22-ranked Central Oklahoma a 5-3 setback Saturday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field.

Four UCO pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts, but the Bronchos managed just seven hits – only one after the fifth inning – and fell to 1-1 on the young season.

"We just got outplayed," head coach John Martin said. "They had some good arms out there and did a nice job shutting us down."

The Beavers broke on top 2-0 in the third inning with a two-out, two-run home run, with UCO coming back to tie it in the bottom of the fourth.

Brett Hopkins started a two-out rally with a long double to center field, Kameron Kilchrist followed with a single to left and Ryan Harrel plated both runners when he laced a triple down the right field line.

It stayed deadlocked until the ninth when Minot pushed across three runs on four hits to go ahead 5-2.

UCO tried to answer in its final at bat, loading the bases with one out on walks to Harrel, Garrett Takamatsu and Philip Scott. Pinch-hitter Kaden Marshall came through with a two-out infield single to make it 5-3 and leave the bases full, but a groundout ended the threat and the game.

Hopkins had two of Central's seven hits.

Luke Anderson earned the starting nod on the mound, allowing four hits and two runs in 4 1/3 innings. The junior right-hander racked up nine strikeouts in his first outing of the season, including six in the first two innings.

Grant Larson followed Anderson with a stellar relief outing as the senior left-hander threw 3 1/3 hitless innings while fanning six and walking two.

UCO returns to action Monday, going to Weatherford to take on Southwestern Oklahoma in a single game at 2 p.m.
