Kelsey Johnson Earns Another MIAA Honor

Senior Forward Had 21-Point, 16-Rebound Game And Hit Game-Winning Buzzer Beater

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The MIAA announced Monday University of Central Oklahoma senior forward Kelsey Johnson is its women's basketball Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row.

Johnson, from Washington, Oklahoma, earned the honor for Week 2 after a standout performance in a three-game week for the Bronchos. She's now earned the honor for Week 3 after another stellar performance on the court.

Central only played once last week in front of the Thanksgiving break. UCO went to Cameron Tuesday and worked its way to a 65-63 victory. The two-point difference came from Johnson as time expired.

The game was tied, 63-63, with 1.7 seconds remaining on the clock. Jaci Littell inbounded the ball to Johnson with an almost 30-foot lob pass from the sideline into the paint, where Johnson fielded the pass, took one dribble, and made her patented turnaround fadeaway. The ball swished through the net and Central celebrated the win.

Johnson scored 21 points in the win and pulled down 16 rebounds. She went 9-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-6 from the free-throw line. She also had one assist, one steal, and one blocked shot.

Johnson leads Central Oklahoma in several categories this season. She is averaging 19.3 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game, as well as 1.1 blocked shots per contest.

Central Oklahoma is 4-2 this season following non-conference play. The Bronchos open up MIAA play this week on the road. UCO is scheduled to play at Missouri Southern Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before visiting Pittsburg State Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
