Academic Awards: Burget, Shin, and the Broncho Way

The University of Central Oklahoma athletic department looks forward each year with great pride to the annual Academic Awards Banquet. The annual spring tradition, held to honor the outstanding achievements of UCO student-athletes in the classroom, is always a joyous occasion. This year, it could not happen. For reasons beyond anyone's control, the closure of campus due to a global health crisis prevented UCO from hosting one its premiere events on the calendar.

However, at Central we believe the recognition can and should still take place. This week, we are highlighting the accomplishments of our student-athletes. Each day, we will honor a different category that would have been highlighted at the banquet.

It is our hope that this method of recognition will suffice and bring a similar joy that the banquet did. And we look forward to returning to hosting the great event next spring.

Today, we recognize a few awards.

The Burget Scholarship is a financial award given to qualified student-athletes in need who have been nominated by their coach, written a letter to the Burget family, and chosen by the committee. Don Burget was a three-sport letterman for the Bronchos who left an endowed scholarship in his name to help current students enjoy the same experience he had at Central.

The Grace  Shin Courage Award is being given for the first time. Shin, a former UCO women's golfer, passed away in 2018 after a battle with leukemia. The courage, fight, and determination she showed during that battle needs to be remembered in every way possible. This is one of them. Find a student-athlete that has fought to overcome the odds.

And lastly, the Broncho Way Award. Also making its debut to the annual awards banquet, the Broncho Way Award is a student-athlete voted award that goes to the teammate that most exemplifies the Broncho Way – the upstanding, model student-athlete who does the right thing in every situation, is a great teammate, and is someone who has unquestionably high character.
