No. 15 UCO Tops Fort Hays State

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Fort Hays State 4-1 Saturday, clinching the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series with a its second win at Larks Park in as many days.

Central Oklahoma is now 15-3 on the season and 4-1 in league play. Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We did a lot offensively early and it was enough," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "With Luke (Anderson) pitching the way he did today, we were in a good spot. It was good to get another win and we need to come out Sunday focused on winning another one."

Luke Anderson got the start Saturday and was dominant, continuing a focused and overpowering theme for the Broncho pitching staff this season. Anderson threw seven innings, allowing just two hits and one walk, and struck out a season-high 10 on the day. Anderson got the win and is now 2-0 on the season.

Jacob Bailey and Jake Terry came out of the bullpen to finish off the Tigers. Bailey struck out a pair in the eighth and Terry one in the ninth to close out the game. Terry earned his first save of the season in holding off FHSU with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Central got after it on offense from the get-go Saturday. The Bronchos put the leadoff runner on in each of the first three innings, and scored in two of those to take an early lead.

In the first, Zac Freeman drew a leadoff walk, Colton Bertus followed with a single up the middle, and Philip Scott moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Then with one out, Garrett Takamatsu notched an RBI groundout to the shortstop to put the Bronchos on the scoreboard, 1-0.

Fort Hays State got one back in the bottom of the second, but the Bronchos kept it pushing on offense.

In the third, Bertus drew a leadoff walk, the three straight singles followed. Scott hit one first, then Takamatsu did too. Joe Mondragon followed that with a single off the wall in left field. The runners didn't plan on advancing as the FHSU outfield settled under the ball, but when he missed on the play, Bertus scored easily to make it 2-1, UCO.

Central added two more in the fifth. After Bertus was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning, Scott singled again and Takamatsu drew a walk. Then Chase Freeman stepped in a delivered a single to left field that scored both Bertus and Scott and gave the Bronchos a 4-1 lead.

Chase  Freeman led the Bronchos at the plate Saturday, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Scott finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Bertus went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Central scattered 10 hits on the day, all singles.
