UCO Hosts Newman

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team opens a season-ending four-game homestand Saturday when the Bronchos welcome Newman to Hamilton Field House. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The Bronchos enter the game with a 7-17 overall record and a 4-11 mark in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings. Newman is 8-16 overall and has a 2-12 mark in league play. UCO is aiming to snap an eight-game losing streak – the first of its kind since the 1950-51 season. The Bronchos enter the weekend averaging 69.1 points per game.

Central leads the league in free-throws made as a team, having sank 395 this season. UCO also has a team-high 530 free-throws attempted. Central's 74.5 percent mark from the free-throw line this season ranks fifth in the MIAA.

Camryn Givens leads Central Oklahoma in both scoring and rebounding this season. The sophomore averages 11.1 points per game, having scored 267 points in 24 games played. Givens also averages 5.8 rebounds per game, having pulled down 140 boards in 24 games. Givens leads Central in several categories, including minutes played (627), minutes per game (26.1), 3-pointers made (28), 3-pointers attempted (71), free-throws made (75), and rebounds (140). His 21 points against Rogers State is a team-high for one game this season, as is his 13 rebounds against Mary.

Dashawn McDowell had been the leading scorer for the Bronchos for nearly the entire season. He is only marginally behind Givens now, averaging 11.0 points per game. McDowell leads the team in field goals made (91), field goals attempted (193), and free-throws attempted (98). He's second behind Givens in free-throws made (71), and rebounds (114). McDowell, who's 21 points against Oklahoma Baptist and Williams Jewell are tied with Givens for the team-high this season, has also registered four games this season with a 100 percent mark from the floor, twice going 8-for-8, a team best.

Newman averages 72.9 points per game. The Jets are led by Marshawn Blackmon at 16.9 points per game. Deandre Johnson averages 12.5 points per game, and Juwan Davenport averages 11.6 per game. Blackmon is also the team's leading rebounder at 9.5 per game, which also leads the MIAA.

UCO is 3-1 all-time against Newman. The Bronchos won 68-66 in Wichita earlier this season, with Dashon Bell knocking down a jump shot at the buzzer to send the Bronchos to victory.

Central Oklahoma will spend the final three weeks of the regular season at home. UCO only plays one game next week, hosting Emporia State, then concludes the 2019-20 regular season with Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays at home at the end of this month.
