Central Hosts Lincoln Monday Night

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team returns to action Monday when the Bronchos host Lincoln in MIAA play at Hamilton Field House. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Central is 5-8 this season heading into Monday night. The Bronchos have a 2-2 record in league play. Lincoln is 5-7 overall and 2-1 in MIAA play. Both teams have two in a row.

UCO picked up a win at Newman before the holiday break, earning a victory thanks to a Dashon Bell buzzer beater. The Bronchos returned from break and whipped the Central Missouri Mules, earning a 26-point win Saturday evening.

The Bronchos have found recent success thanks to the emergence of true freshman D.J. Basey. The Mesquite, Texas native and 6-foot-10 big man is averaging 16.1 points per game over the past three games dating back to Dec. 17. Basey has scored 16, 19, and 14. How he got there has been just as impressive. Basey went 7-for-10 against Oklahoma Baptist, 8-for-10 against Newman, and 7-for-7 against Central Missouri for a combined 22-for-27 (81.4 percent) from the floor. He is averaging 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds for the year.

Bell has been influential in Central's offensive output. The Broncho senior guard is averaging 9.7 points per game this season. He also averages just under four assists per game.

Dashawn McDowell has been the team's leading scorer for most of the season. He is averaging 13.1 points per game, has a team-high 56 made field goals and a team-high 54 made free-throws. McDowell also averages 5.5 rebounds per game, which is tied for the team lead with Camryn Givens.

Givens is third on the team in scoring behind McDowell and Bell, scoring 8.2 points per game to go with his 5.5 rebounds per game. Givens is second on the team with 12 made 3-pointers and third on the team with 25 made free-throws.

Justin Nimmer (8.2), Cooper Clark (6.5) and Colt Savage (6.2) are also key figures on offense for the Bronchos.

UCO as a team is averaging 70.8 points per game. The Bronchos shoot 44.1 percent from the field overall and 30.6 percent from behind the arc. Central hits 74.1 percent of its free-throws, making 235 from the line so far this season. UCO leads the MIAA in free-throws made and attempted (317) and is fourth in team free-throw percentage.

Lincoln enters the game averaging 69.4 points per game. The Blue Tigers shoot 43.9 percent from the floor overall, 33.1 percent from outside, and 57.3 percent from the free-throw line. Jonell Burton leads the team with 16.2 points per game and is second on the team in rebounds at 4.5 per game while Cameron Potts is second on the team in scoring at 12 points per game and leads the team in rebounds with 6.7 per outing. Marcel Burton also averages double figures, scoring 10.1 points per game.

Central Oklahoma opens the new year with four games in seven days. The Bronchos won the first on Saturday. UCO will wrap up the busy opening week with a trip to Missouri Southern on Thursday and Pittsburg State on Saturday.
