UCO Visits Washburn Thursday

TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team is back on the road this week, taking on Washburn and Emporia State in an MIAA road swing. The Bronchos tipoff against the Ichabods of Topeka, Kan. first, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. from Lee Arena. Central is 7-11 overall this season and has a 4-5 record in league play. Washburn is 9-7 overall and has a 4-3 mark in the MIAA.

Central enters the game averaging 69.3 points per game and the Bronchos are allowing 69.4 per game. Through 18 games played, UCO has scored 1,248 points and given up 1,250. That close margin has been a theme all year. Central has lost 8 of 11 by single digits, and three of those eight were by one possession. The Bronchos have five losses this season in a game they had a chance to win on the final possession.

The free-throw line has been a major point of emphasis for the Bronchos this season. UCO leads the MIAA in free-throws made (312), free-throws attempted (419), and is fourth in the league in percentage (74.5). Central ranks 14th nationally in makes and 17th in the country in attempts.

Camryn Givens has surged recently and is now averaging double figures in scoring. The sophomore has been the team's leading rebounder all season and now that he is scoring at a higher rate, he has become Central's best player. Givens is averaging 10.5 points per game this season and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Dashawn McDowell continues to lead the Bronchos in scoring, averaging 12.1 points per game. The junior shoots 50.7 percent overall from the floor in doing so. And at 5.1 rebounds per game, he is second behind Givens in that category. McDowell also leads the team in free-throws made (68) and free-throws attempted (88) and ranks third and fourth in the MIAA in those categories.

Washburn enters Thursday's game with a 9-7 overall record and a 4-3 mark in league play. The Ichabods average 75.1 points per game as a team and shoot 45.3 percent from the floor overall, making 34.7 percent of its 3-pointers (8.6 per game). Tyler Geiman's 14.5 points per game leads the team while Jalen Lewis (13), Drew Maschoff (11.6), and Jonny Clausing (10.5) all average double figures to support the effort.

Central Oklahoma holds a 16-12 lead over Washburn in the all-time series between the two schools dating back to the 1938-39 season. UCO won that matchup, 32-28, and the first five in the series, which still stands as the longest win streak by either team. Washburn has won four out of the last five meetings, including a 88-69 win in Topeka last season.

UCO takes on Emporia State Sunday afternoon in Emporia, Kan. to wrap up the brief road trip before hosting Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri next Thursday and Saturday respectively.
