UCO Returns From Break To Face UCM

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team returns from its holiday break and will host Central Missouri Saturday at 3:30 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House.
 
The Bronchos bring a 4-8 overall record into Saturday's game. UCO is 1-2 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Central Missouri is 6-5 overall and 1-1 in league play.
 
Central Oklahoma as a team is averaging 69.5 points per game this season. The Bronchos are shooting 43.5 percent from the floor overall this season, 30.4 percent from behind the arc, and 73.9 percent from the free-throw line. Central is fourth in the MIAA in free-throw percentage.
 
Central Oklahoma continues to be led in scoring by Dashawn McDowell and Dashon Bell. McDowell averages a team-high 13.4 points per game and Bell scores 10.3 per contest. McDowell, who plays a team-high 30 minutes per game, shoots 51 percent from the floor (53-for-104), and 75 percent from the free-throw line (51-for-68). Bell shoots 41.9 percent from the floor (36-for-86), and 78.6 percent from the free-throw line (44-for-56). The two account for an even 34 percent of the Bronchos's scoring.
 
Freshman big man D.J. Basey had a big week before the break for the Bronchos. The 6-foot-10 center scored a season-high 16 points in UCO's double-overtime loss to Oklahoma Baptist. He added six rebounds in the effort. Then later that week, he scored a new season-high 19 points in Central's MIAA road win over Newman. Basey pulled down seven rebounds in that game and was nominated for MIAA Player of the Week.
 
Central Missouri is on a three-game win streak, which started with the Mules knocking off the defending national champs in Northwest Missouri. UCM ended Northwest's 46-game win streak as well. The Mules average 69.5 points per game as a team and shoot 44.5 percent from the floor. UCM shoots 36.7 percent from behind the arc, averaging 8.3 made threes per game. Gaven Pinkley is the team's leading scorer after 11 games, averaging 14.2 points per game. He's also the team's leading rebounder at 6.2 boards per game.
 
Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri have met 18 times and both teams have won nine games. The first meeting came all the way back in the 1957-58 season. UCO has a piar of three-game win streaks in the series (2010-13 & 2015-17). The schools have alternated wins in each of the past three meetings.
 
Central Oklahoma is only beginning a very busy week with Saturday's matchup against Central Missouri. The Bronchos will play host to Lincoln on Monday, Jan. 6 before traveling to Joplin, Mo. to take on Missouri Southern on Thursday, Jan. 9. UCO wraps up four games in seven days next Saturday when the Bronchos take on Pittsburg State in southeast Kansas.
