UCO Falls To Gorillas In MIAA Opener

EDMOND (Sept. 20) – Too many mistakes and too much Pittsburg State was a bad combination for Central Oklahoma Friday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos committed a season-high 29 errors and hit a season-low .093 percentage in dropping a four-set decision in their Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener. The Gorillas won the first set 25-20 before UCO came back to take the second one 25-17, but PSU won the final two setts 25-15, 25-19.

Central dropped to 8-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play, while Pitt State improved to 7-3 and 2-0. The Bronchos will be back at home Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. conference tilt against Newman.

"We got outplayed and didn't do what we needed to," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I thought we played well in the second set, but overall we couldn't overcome all the hitting errors. We just need to put it behind us and get ready for tomorrow."

A pair of freshmen led the Bronchos, with Courtney Lane knocking down 12 kills and Bailey Combs 10. Rookie Regan Inglis had eight kills, six blocks and two service aces.

Amanda Desch had another solid all-around outing with seven kills, 20 assists, 10 digs and three blocks. Dominique Lipari had a match-high 25 digs, while Ericka Scholl and Bella Burns had 11 apiece.

The opening set was a back-and-forth battle most of the way, with 11 ties and five lead changes. It was deadlocked at 15-all when PSU scored five straight points to take control.

The second set was also close early on and was tied 9-9 when UCO reeled off nine unanswered points. A combined block by Desch and Inglis started that run and Lane ended it with back-to-back kills to put the Bronchos ahead 18-9.

Pitt State came back with a 5-0 run to get within 18-14, but Inglis had a kill and a block while Bailey Combs had two kills the rest of the way as Central took the set to even the match.

The Bronchos never recovered after falling behind early in the third set and then let a 10-7 lead slip away in the fourth as PSU closed out the match.
