UCO Sweeps Savage Storm

EDMOND (Sept. 18) – Amanda Desch served up five of Central Oklahoma's season-high 10 aces as the Bronchos wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma Wednesday night at Hamilton Field House.

UCO needed just 17 minutes to claim a 25-8 rout in the opening set, but needed more work to take the final two before finally prevailing 25-19 and 27-25. The Bronchos improved to 8-2 with their 11th straight win over the SOSU.

"It was pretty sloppy and we really struggled with our offense," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team had a season-low .128 attack percentage. "We used a lot of different combinations and that probably contributed to some of our problems, but we're going to have to play better once we get into conference play."

That happens Friday, when Central hosts Pittsburg State at 6 p.m. in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association opener.

No player had more than seven kills for the Bronchos, with Kaeli Robinson reaching that number to lead the team. Desch and Courtney Lane had five each, with Desch adding 18 assists and the five aces along with two blocks.

Bailey Combs, Malia Kaaiohelo and Lauren Jenkins added four kills apiece. Dominique Lipari had a match-high 19 digs and Ericka Scholl chipped in 10.

UCO seized command quickly in the first set, zipping to an 11-1 led behind three Lane kills and a Kaaiohelo ace.

There were nine ties and five lead changes in the second set before the Bronchos took control when Desch had three aces and a kill in an 8-1 run that gave UCO a 21-13 lead. The Savage Storm rallied to make it close down the stretch, but never threatened to take the lead.

Central never trailed in the third set, grabbing a 6-1 lead as Chloe Hancock had an ace and a kill while Robinson knocked down two kills. It was a 23-19 lead when SOSU scored four straight points to tie it, with the Bronchos finally ending the late drama with a combined block by Desch and Nalani McCrary.
