Bronchos Beat Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team defeated Northeastern State on Saturday afternoon, 78-67. The Bronchos move to 10-12 on the season overall and 3-10 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

"I'm incredibly proud of the guys today." UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "This was a big win and they played as a team. They slowed down the game and made sure they got good shots each procession. We had guys step up today and it showed."

Jordan London led the Bronchos with 18 points. He shot 100 percent on the day, going 4-for-4 from the 3-point line. Adarius Avery had 15 points, 13 rebounds and added three steals.

Jaylan Williams and Marquis Johnson had 11 points each. Josh Holliday added 10 and Jordan Hemphill with nine.

The Bronchos shot 46.4 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from the three-point line. The UCO defense forced 14 NSU turnovers. They out stole the Riverhawks 10-4.

The first half started off with a big three from Holliday that got the Bronchos fired up and on a 11-0 run against the Riverhawks. Northeastern finally got up on the scoreboard from a 3-point field goal about five minutes into the half.

The Bronchos let the Riverhawks back into the game with five minutes left knocking down a three and forcing a UCO turnover to get the ball back. NSU knocked down a field goal to make the score 27-24.  The ball game went back and forth after that, both teams knocking down shots.

NSU scored the last two buckets of the half off of a UCO turnover. The score going into halftime was 32-29. The Bronchos forced nine NSU turnovers and 14 of the Bronchos points came from in the paint.

The Riverhawks came out of halftime, knocking down shots and tied the ball game, then took the lead with about four minutes into the half. The ball game went back and forth until ten minutes left when Avery knocked down a big jumper that gave them the lead back.

The Bronchos made the ones that counted and knocked down three-throws in the stretch to keep their lead. NSU was forced to start fouling and try to get the ball back but fouling the MIAA free-throw leaders didn't help them out. Avery drained two free-throws to cap off the game with just seconds to go.

UCO is back in action with two road games next week. They will face Emporia State on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Washburn on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3:00 p.m.
