UCO Takes Sting Out of Hornets

EMPORIA, Kan. (Nov. 2) – Lauren Jenkins had 11 kills and five blocks to lead Central Oklahoma to a runaway rout of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Emporia State Saturday night.

The Bronchos rolled past the Hornets 25-12, 25-20, 25-18 to end a two-match losing streak and clinch a spot in the eight-team MIAA Postseason Tournament that will be held Nov. 21-23 in Kansas City, Mo.

UCO improved to 17-10 overall and is fifth in the conference standings at 9-8 with three matches remaining. The Bronchos end their home schedule this weekend, hosting Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri on back-to-back nights.

"That was a match we needed to win," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "I was proud of the way we came out and took care of business. We didn't play our best, but we made the plays we needed to when it counted and got the job done."

Jenkins hit .476, collecting 11 kills in 21 attacks with just one error while adding five blocks – four assisted and one solo.

Bailey Combs and Courtney Lane had eight kills apiece and Nalani McCrary chipped in four kills and four assisted blocks. Dominique Lipari notched 14 digs, with Amanda Desch contributing 20 assists and nine digs.

The Bronchos trailed 3-2 early in the opening set and then scored five straight points to take the lead for good. Ericka Scholl's service ace capped that spurt and Jordan Cramer added two more aces as the lead grew to 14-5 before UCO coasted in.

The second set was close throughout and was tied 18-18 before Combs knocked down three kills in a closing surge that pushed Central to the win.

Jenkins keyed the third-set win that closed out the match, putting down one kill while teaming with McCrary for two blocks and rejecting one attack herself in a 9-1 run that put the Bronchos in control.
