Bronchos Fall To No. 5 Washburn

EDMOND (Oct. 5) – Central Oklahoma put up a fight but wasn't able to stay with No. 5-ranked Washburn in the end as the Bronchos dropped a three-set decision Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

UCO fell to 12-5 overall and 4-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 loss. The Ichabods improved to 14-1 and 6-1.

"I thought we battled hard, but Washburn has a great team and we just didn't have enough firepower," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We had some good opportunities in the second and third sets and just couldn't get it done."

The Bronchos hit just .091 in the match, collecting 27 kill against 17 errors in 110 attacks. UCO was also hurt by six service errors.

Amanda Desch led Central with eight kills, nine assists and nine digs. Bailey Combs had six kills and Courtney Lane five, while Dominique Lipari continued her defensive brilliance with 22 digs.

Washburn had three players with double-digit kills.

The Bronchos never led in dropping the first set, but had several chances in a second set that saw 14 ties and eight lead changes.

The last tie came at 16-all on a Desch kill before a service error helped kick-start a 5-0 WU scoring run that UCO couldn't recover from.

The Bronchos jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set behind a pair of Desch kills and were up 9-6 after a WU service error. The Ichabods then reeled off eight straight points to go ahead 14-9 and UCO got no closer than four the rest of the way.

Central goes on the road for two league matches next week, playing at Northwest Missouri Friday and Central Missouri Saturday.
