Bronchos Knock Off No. 10 Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. (Oct. 11) – Bailey Combs had six of her match-high 15 kills in the first set to help stake Central Oklahoma to an early lead and the Bronchos went on to a stunning sweep of No. 10-ranked Northwest Missouri Friday night.

UCO prevailed 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 for its 10th straight win over the Bearcats, improving to 13-5 on the season and 5-3 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. NWMSU fell to 12-3 and 5-2.

"That was a tremendous win for us and I'm so proud of the way we played as a team tonight," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "To go on the road and beat someone as good as Northwest Missouri says a lot about our team.

"Every set was tough, but we hung in there and didn't get rattled. It's a great win, but there's not much time to celebrate because we've got another big match tomorrow night."

The Bronchos move on to Warrensburg, Mo. Saturday for a 7 p.m. league contest against No. 13 Central Missouri.

Combs hit a sizzling .536 against NWMSU, collecting her 15 kills in 28 attacks with no errors. Fellow freshman Courtney Lane had 11 kills and a career-high 23 digs, while Chloe Hancock hit .450 with 10 kills and just one error in 20 attempts.

UCO also got 31 assists, 14 digs and five kills from Amanda Desch, while Dominique Lipari had 24 digs and Elena Garcia 10.

Combs had six of her kills in the first set, which went back-and-forth from the outset before UCO found itself trailing 15-11 and then 17-13. The Bronchos rallied, getting two kills from Lane in a 5-0 spurt to move in front 18-17.

Kills by Combs and Hancock along with a Lipari ace put Central on top 24-20, NWMSU stayed alive with a block and then Lane knocked down her fifth kill of the set to end it.

UCO jumped on top 4-0 in the second set behind a Lane kill and ace and the lead grew to 11-5 before the Bearcats came back to tie it at 17-all.

The Bronchos forged ahead 22-18 behind a pair of Nalani McCrary kills and it was a 23-21 advantage when back-to-back kills by Lauren Jenkins and Hancock gave UCO the 25-21 win.

NWMSU grabbed a quick 7-3 lead in the third set, but Central came back to tie it at 11 and the teams swapped leads from then on until the Bronchos went up 21-20 on a Bearcat attack error.

It was a 23-22 lead when consecutive kills by Combs and Desch ended the set to give UCO the monumental upset.
