Lane Leads Bronchos Past Newman

WICHITA, Kan. (Oct. 15) – Courtney Lane knocked down 15 kills and Central Oklahoma rolled over Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Newman Tuesday night at Fugate Gymnasium.

The Bronchos claimed 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 wins, improving to 14-6 on the season and 6-4 in conference play in finishing off a home-and-home sweep of the Jets.

"We played pretty solid all night and came out with a nice road win," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Offensively we did some good things. This team keeps working hard and getting better."

UCO hit .315 in the sweep, notching 45 kills in 111 attacks with just 10 errors.

Lane led the way, hitting .371 with 15 kills and two miscues in 35 attempts. The hard-hitting freshman had four kills in the first set, six in the second and five in the third.

Kaeli Robinson also had a stellar outing for the Bronchos, hitting .471 with nine kills and one error in 17 attempts. Chloe Hancock and Amanda Desch added six kills each, with Desch also handing out 23 assists.

The first set went back-and-forth in the early going, with neither team leading by more than one point until UCO broke away from a 9-9 tie with a 4-0 run. Robinson had two kills in that spurt and Bailey Combs capped it with a cross-court kill to make it 13-9.

The lead grew to 19-13 on Bella Burns' ace, then Newman rallied with four straight points to get within 19-17. It was 22-20 when a pair of Jet errors and Lane's hard shot down the middle gave the Bronchos the win.

Central fell behind 5-1 in the second set, but quickly answered with five unanswered points to go ahead 6-5 on Hancock's kill. The Bronchos used an 8-2 run to take a big 17-10 advantage, getting two kills from Lane along with aces from Dominique Lipari and Desch in that scoring spree.

The Jets fought back to within 20-18, but Lane smashed down two more kills, Desch teamed with Hancock and Nalani McCrary for a pair of blocks and UCO polished off the 25-20 victory.

It was close in the early stages of the third set before the Bronchos took control, breaking away from an 8-6 lead to a big 16-9 cushion. Lane and Robinson had two kills apiece the rest of the way as UCO finished off the sweep.

The Bronchos return home to continue league play Friday, hosting Missouri Western at 6 p.m.
