Central Falls At National Duals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 5) – Brik Filippo and Heath Gray earned bonus-point wins, but it wasn't enough for Central Oklahoma as the No. 13-ranked Bronchos fell to No. 7 Wheeling Jesuit 27-16 in the consolation semifinals of the NWCA Division II National Duals Saturday morning at Freedom Hall.

UCO fell to 4-2 on the season and will take on No. 21 Upper Iowa in the seventh-place match at 11 a.m. (Oklahoma time).

Filippo had a second-period fall at 149 and Gray a dominating major decision at 184 for the Bronchos, while Tanner Cole pulled off a big upset at 125 and Wyatt Jordan earned a tough win at 165.

Cole knocked off fifth-ranked Cole Laya 11-8 in just his second career match to open the dual. The redshirt freshman had an escape, takedown and reverse in the second period to turn a 3-3 tie into an 8-5 lead, then added an escape and two penalty points in the third to go up 11-5 before coasting in.

Filippo stayed perfect for the weekend with his fall at the 4:05 mark. The redshirt freshman was holding a slim 4-3 lead midway through the second period when he took Christian Rivera to his back on the edge of the mat and quickly got the pin.

That put the Bronchos in front 9-7, but WJU answered with a fall of its own at 157 to go ahead for good.

Jordan trailed 10th-ranked Keegan Driscoll 2-1 entering the final period of their 165-pound battle before tying it with a quick escape. He broke the deadlock on a takedown with 17 seconds left and tacked on a riding time point to finish off the 5-2 triumph.

Gray gave up an early takedown and then took control in earning his 15th bonus win of the season. The fourth-ranked sophomore got an escape and takedown to go ahead 3-2 after one period, then scored eight second-period points in making it 11-2 on his way to a 17-4 rout.
