Streaking Bronchos Sweep Arkansas Tech

EDMOND (Sept. 8) – No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma continued its dominating ways in the final match of the MIAA/GAC Challenge Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos steamrolled defending GAC champion Arkansas Tech 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 to complete a four-match, 12-set sweep in the two-day event.  UCO, now 11-2, has won 10 straight matches and 17 consecutive sets.

"It was a good weekend for us," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We had some stretches in each match where we played extremely well, though we're still making some mistakes that we need to clean up.

"Arkansas Tech has a really good team, so this was a great win for us and a perfect way to end the weekend."

Senior standouts Taylor Bevis and Jordan Spence led the Bronchos, combining for 21 kills and a .347 attack percentage.  Bevis hit .333 with a match-high13 kills and two errors in 33 attempts, while Spence hit .375 with eight kills and two miscues in 16 tries.

Bevis also had a match-leading 14 digs and Spence added three assisted blocks.  UCO also got six kills each from Malia Kaaiohelo and Haley Deschenes, with Kaaiohelo adding three blocks.

McKenzie Fyfe contributed 13 assists and 13 digs and Dominique Lipari chipped in 12 digs.

Bevis knocked down two kills down the line early in the first set as Central jumped on top 4-0, but the Golden Sun came back to tie it at 8-all.  A service error put the Bronchos in front for good, Spence added a kill and block as the lead grew to 12-8 and UCO pulled away from there.

The second set was close early, with eight ties and four lead changes.  Spence's slam dunk kill at the net broke an 8-8 tie and sparked a 10-4 run to give the Bronchos an 18-12 lead and ATU never recovered.

UCO trailed 12-8 in the third set before going on an 11-3 run to grab a 19-15 lead.  Bevis and Deschenes had two kills apiece in that spurt and Spence had two the rest of the way as the Bronchos polished off their 10th sweep of the season.

Central is back in action Monday with a 6 p.m. match at Arkansas-Fort Smith.
