Bevis, Deschenes Key UCO Rout

FORT SMITH, Ark. (Sept. 10) – Taylor Bevis and Haley Deschenes combined for 28 kills as Central Oklahoma continued its hot streak with a rout of Arkansas-Fort Smith here Monday night.

The Bronchos strolled past the defending Heartland Conference champion Lady Lions 25-21, 25-14, 25-19 for their 11th straight win.  UCO, which has now won 20 consecutive sets, improved to 12-2 in its final non-conference match of the regular season.

"That was a nice win for us on the road against a good team," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team beat defending Great American Conference champion Arkansas Tech in its last outing.  "We came out ready to play and took care of business.  Now we need to get ready to start the conference schedule."

Central opens Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play Friday night, hosting Southwest Baptist at 6 p.m.

Bevis had a .344 attack percentage in the rout of UAFS, collecting 16 kills against five errors in 32 attacks in addition to making 10 digs.  Deschenes hit .303 with 12 kills and two errors in 33 attempts.

The Bronchos also got eight kills from Malia Kaaiohelo and seven from Karyn ChrismanDominique Lipari again played a key role with her back-row defense in digging up 22 attacks, while Ericka Scholl had 25 assists and 11 digs.

Deschenes keyed UCO's first-set win, knocking down two kills and coming up with two solo blocks in a 6-0 run that turned an early 2-1 deficit into a 7-2 lead.   Bevis took charge late, notching four kills down the stretch after the Lady Lions had closed to within 20-19.

Kaaiohelo had three kills in a 9-2 second-set scoring spurt as Central broke away from a 2-2 tie to an 11-4 lead and UAFS never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

The Bronchos scored four unanswered points early in the third set to break away from a 5-4 lead as Deschenes had a pair of kills and teamed with Jordan Spence for a block.  That made it 9-4 and UCO coasted in from there.
