Central Calms Savage Storm

EDMOND (Sept. 8) – Taylor Bevis had 12 kills and three service aces as streaking Central Oklahoma rolled over another outmatched opponent Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House on the second day of the MIAA/GAC Challenge.

The No. 18-ranked Bronchos blistered Southeastern Oklahoma 25-9, 25-17, 25-21 for their ninth straight win, improving to 10-2 on the season.  UCO, which also earned its ninth sweep, finishes the two-day event at 6 p.m. against Arkansas Tech.

"We played pretty well at times, but were a little inconsistent with our offense," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "The defense was good early, especially our blocking."

Central had a .268 attack percentage for the match, collecting 37 kills against 11 errors in 97 attempts.  The Bronchos also made 7.0 blocks as the Savage Storm hit just .049.

Bevis knocked down four kills in each set in hitting .321, finishing with 12 kills and three miscues in 28 attempts.  The senior All-American also had a team-high 12 digs in addition to serving up three aces.

Karyn Chrisman had eight kills and two assisted blocks, while Amanda Desch and Jordan Spence had four kills each.  McKenzie Fyfe handed out 19 assists and Dominique Lipari had three aces along with nine digs.

UCO jumped on top early in the opening set, getting kills from Bevis and Chrisman along with a combined block by Spence and Bevis to go up 4-0.  Lipari had back-to-back aces as the lead grew to 14-5 and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

The second set went back and forth early before Malia Kaaiohelo's hard shot at the net ignited a 5-1 run that gave UCO an 11-7 lead.  SOSU got no closer than four the rest of the way.

The Savage Storm came out strong in the third set and built a 10-4 lead before UCO rallied.  An 8-2 run tied it at 12-all and Bevis' cross-court kill snapped a 16-16 deadlock to put the Bronchos in front for good.
