No. 18 UCO Rolls Over Rangers

EDMOND (Sept. 7) – Haley Deschenes had five of her match-high 11 kills in the second set to spark a big comeback and No. 18-ranked Central Oklahoma overwhelmed Northwestern Oklahoma on the first day of the MIAA/GAC Challenge Friday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos breezed to a 25-12 first-set rout, overcame an eight-point deficit in the second set to pull out a 25-22 win and completed their seventh sweep of the season with a 25-13 third-set romp.

It was the seventh straight win for Central, which improved to 8-2 in its first home match of the season.  The Bronchos return to action at 6 p.m. against Southern Nazarene and then play two more matches Saturday.

"We played pretty well overall, especially offensively," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "Northwestern really took it to us to start the second set, but we didn't panic, worked our way back and came out with a good win.  We're making progress and just need to keep getting better."

UCO finished with a .432 attack percentage, collecting 46 kills against just eight errors in 88 attempts.

Deschenes hit .333 in finishing with 11 kills while adding four assisted blocks to lead the way.  Karyn Chrisman had a .500 attack percentage with 10 kills and one error in 18 tries and Taylor Bevis hit .450 with nine kills.

Jordan Spence and Malia Kaaiohelo chipped in five kills apiece, with Spence blocking four shots and Kaaiohelo three.  Ericka Scholl dished out 27 assists and Dominique Lipari made 18 digs.

The Bronchos hit .520 in the opening set and took control early, getting two kills from Bevis during a 5-1 run that broke an early 2-2 tie.

NWOSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second set and was up 12-4 before Central rallied.  Amanda Desch's kill capped a 10-2 run that tied it at 14-all and it was close the rest of the way.

The Bronchos went ahead to stay at 19-18 on a service error, with Deschenes and Bevis knocking down two kills each the rest of the way as UCO finished off the big comeback.

Deschenes teamed with Kaaiohelo for two blocks and added a kill during an 8-0 spurt that turned a 5-3 deficit into an 11-5 lead in the third set and Central coasted after that.
