Balanced Bronchos Rout SNU

EDMOND (Sept. 7) – Five players had six kills apiece to lead a balanced attack that carried Central Oklahoma to a runaway sweep of Southern Nazarene Friday night at Hamilton Field House to complete first-day play in the MIAA/GAC Challenge.

The No. 18-ranked Bronchos dominated from start-to-finish in an easy 25-9, 25-12, 25-13 romp in stretching their winning streak to eight straight.  It was also the eighth sweep of the season for UCO, now 9-2.

Central finishes the two-day event Saturday with matches against Southeastern Oklahoma at 12 p.m. and Arkansas Tech at 6 p.m.

"We got off to a great start and played a good overall match," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We were able to get a lot of players on the court and everybody contributed."

Fourteen players saw action for the Bronchos, who had 38 kills and just nine errors in 83 attacks to finish with a .349 hitting percentage.

Karyn Chrisman, Malia Kaaiohelo, Taylor Bevis, Haley Deschenes and Amanda Desch all had six kills, while Jordan Spence added four and Chloe Hancock three.

Kaaiohelo hit .600 with no errors in 10 attempts in addition to blocking three shots and Spence had four blocks.  UCO also got 21 assists and three service aces from Ericka Scholl and 16 digs from Dominique Lipari.

The Bronchos never trailed in the opening set in quickly seizing command of the match.  Chrisman had back-to-back kills, Jordan Cramer capped a set-opening 5-0 run with an ace and SNU never got close.

UCO trailed 4-2 early in the third set before scoring five unanswered points to move ahead for good at 7-4.  Deschenes had consecutive kills in that spurt and the Bronchos soon pulled away.

Central jumped on top early in the third set, getting a pair of blocks from Spence and an ace from Callie Bangasser in going ahead 4-0.  The Crimson Storm were within 6-3, but a Chrisman kill, Scholl ace and Bevis kill made it 9-3 and the Bronchos cruised in to finish off the sweep.
