UCO Rebounds With Sweep of Hornets

EDMOND (Sept. 29) – Jordan Spence, Taylor Bevis and Haley Deschenes combined for 13 kills in leading Central Oklahoma to a tight first-set win and the No. 18-ranked Bronchos went on to overwhelm Emporia State Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

UCO pulled away late for a 25-20 victory in the opening set before cruising 25-11, 25-18 in the final two sets to record their 15th sweep of the season. The Bronchos improved to 17-4 overall and 5-2 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"Our offense was pretty good today and I was happy with the way we bounced back after a tough loss last night," said head coach Edgar Miraku, whose team fell to No. 13 Washburn Friday night.  "We struggled some in the first set, but after that I thought we played pretty well."

Central hit .304 in the match, collecting 45 kills with just 10 errors in 115 attacks.  No individual had double-digit kills, but four had eight or more.

Spence and Deschenes finished with nine kills apiece and neither had an error, with each hitting .474 for the match.  Malia Kaaiohelo hit a blistering .889 with eight kills and no miscues in nine attacks, while Bevis also had eight kills in addition to 10 digs and three assisted blocks.

McKenzie Fyfe finished with a match-high 18 assists and added 11 digs, Ericka Scholl had 17 assists with three service aces and Dominique Lipari collected a team-leading 14 digs with two aces.

Spence had five kills, with Bevis and Deschenes getting four apiece in the opening set that featured seven ties and four lead changes.

UCO had a 19-18 lead before Spence had three kills in a 4-1 run that made it 23-19, with a Karyn Chrisman kill and combined block by Bevis and Kaaiohelo finishing off the first-set triumph.

Scholl had three consecutive aces in staking the Bronchos to a quick 6-1 lead in the second set.  The Hornets never threatened again and Amanda Desch had all five of her kills in the match during the set.

The third set was close early before Central took control with a 9-2 run that turned a 4-4 tie into a 13-6 lead.  Deschenes had two kills, while Lipari and Callie Bangasser added aces to key that spurt and the Bronchos coasted in to finish off the sweep.

UCO resumes conference play next weekend with matches at Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western.
