UCO Survives Bearcats

MARYVILLE, Mo. (Oct. 5) -- Malia Kaaiohelo knocked down a career-high 14 kills to lead a contingent of four players who collected double-digit kills as No. 19-ranked Central Oklahoma pulled out a thrilling five-set win over Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Northwest Missouri here Friday night.

The Bronchos took the first two sets 25-17, 25-22, lost the next two 25-21, 25-22 and then withstood a late NWMSU rally for a 16-14 triumph in the deciding set to come out with the crucial conference road victory.  UCO improved to 18-4 overall and 6-2 in league play while dropping the Bearcats to 14-5 and 6-2.

"It was a great match and could have gone either way, but we managed to come out on top," head coach Edgar Miraku said.  "We put ourselves in great position winning the first two sets, but credit to Northwest Missouri for coming back like they did.  It was a battle to the end and we just made a few more plays than they did."

Kaaiohelo hit a sizzling .423, collecting 14 kills with just three errors in 26 attacks while adding five total blocks.  Taylor Bevis had a match-high 21 kills with 20 digs and four blocks, Haley Deschenes hit .317 with 16 kills and Karyn Chrisman added 10 kills.

Jordan Spence also came up big with seven kills and no errors in 22 attempts for a .318 attack percentage in addition to recording eight total blocks.  McKenzie Fyfe had 29 assists and 19 digs, Ericka Scholl 34 assists and Dominique Lipari 23 digs.


Spence and Bevis combined for two blocks and Spence had a kill as the Bronchos jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set in taking the early lead in the match.  UCO was up 21-14 in the second set before the Bearcats rallied to within 23-22, but back-to-back Bevis kills ended it to put Central up 2-0.

NWMSU came back to take the next two sets and tie the match to set up the faithful fifth.

UCO broke away from a 5-5 tie to take a 12-9 lead in the and was within a point of ending the match after going up 14-12 on a Kaaiohelo kill only to see the Bearcats come back to tie it at 14-all.  Deschenes' kill made it 15-14 and a NWMSU error ended the drama.


The Bronchos move on to St. Joseph, Mo. Saturday to take on Missouri Western in a 3 p.m. conference contest.
